If you have ever thought about networking, there are a few tips to follow

. Networking is nothing more than a group or several individuals who gather for the purpose of sharing information, services or opportunities. There are many networking opportunities if you know where to look.

Before looking elsewhere, contact the Chamber of Commerce. Most Chamber organizations will collect a fee for membership but if you use their services, it should come back to your business in new business. If they have normal networking meetings, you will be surprised at how many opportunities will arise.

Be advised that some chamber organizations do not have networking meetings. If this is the case you should call some other nearby chambers to see how many networking opportunities they have every month. If they have weekly meetings it is by far the best option. Frequency is the key to success in the chamber. The more you see other members and discuss your offerings the better.

Networking groups are another great way to network. You might even find that some networking groups in your area are geared toward your own offering. They may be generic as well. There are some fee based groups and others are free. Using the internet is the best way to find these groups. They are often times not listed in the yellow pages.


Another great way to network is to channel your other social outings. Many hand shakes and deals have been solidified on the golf course. If you are a member of any team, group, club etc. they are all good outlets for networking. Some other examples might include church, boy scouts, parents at youth league sports and many more.

Take your networking efforts online. Social media sites are exceptional for networking. Sites like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter are great examples. With Facebook you will connect with many of your old friends. In normal conversation with them, you will create opportunities.

There are a couple of "must do" rules about networking. Always carry your business card or other information so you can hand it out when necessary. Business cards are best because they are easy to carry. Secondly, never try to push your good or service on the person you are networking with. They will let you know if there is any interest in your business. What you want to do is focus the discussion on his or her ability to put you in contact with others who may use your services. And, you do the same for them.

Networking can increase your business. Just about everyone knows someone they can refer even if they have little to no interest in what you do. Focus your efforts that way and you too will be a successful at networking.
