Networking Terminology Detailed
If networking terms puzzle you, this should hopefully explain some of the main ones

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, is a popular and prevalent internet connection for home users in the UK.
IP Transit - an internet connection provided by a transit provider.
Atom - similar to RSS but is newer and offers a greater range of facilities. Still in development, but catching on. It is also an XML based specification like RSS.
Bandwidth refers to information being transfered through an internet connection. This is commonly measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or kilobits per second (Kbps).
Blog - similar to an online journal where a person or society may publish its thoughts or opinions, but can also publish facts. Blogs are usually updated two or three times a week and are displayed in chronological order.
Broadband refers to a connection which has more bandwidth than a modem, and tends to be a very generic term with no specific speed committed to it, but will always mean a connection to the internet rather than LAN connection.
Co-Location is where a server belongs to one person or company but is hosted on the internet by another company or person.
DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration - distributes IP addresses to clients on a network dynamically.
DNS - domain name system translates a domain name into an IP address.
Domain name - all websites have a unique domain name. Domain names have three sections to them- in the centre a dot, separating the name, and at the end a tld or domain ending such as .com.
Ethernet - a common way of networking computers on a LAN, there are multiple standards and speeds available.
Firewall - protection from malicious network traffic.
FTP - file transfer Protocol, a method used to upload and download files on the internet.
Host - a computer on a network that has services available to other computers on the network, it can host just one or many different types.
HTTP - HyperText Transfer Protocol is used for moving hypertext files around the internet. HTTP is the most significant protocol used in the World Wide Web (www)
IMAP is slowly replacing POP for accessing email. Using IMAP, an email client program can not only retrieve email but can also manipulate content stored on the server, without having to actually retrieve the messages. IMAP allows for greater control over email as they can be stored, emailed etc and shared between groups where POP email can't.
IPv4 or Internet Protocol version 4 is the most used internet protocol. IPv4 allows for a maximum of four billing ip addresses. Because of this it's being replaced by IPv6. IPv6 is slowly replacing IPv4 as it allows for the use of more IP addresses.
IPv6 is slowly coming into play as the replacement for IPv4, allowing for a vast amount more IP addresses.
LAN - local area network is a private network of computers.
Network - when two or more computers are connected together to share resources.
Where can you find these services? IP transit provider would be able to cater for most of the services above.
