Neurooncology

Neurooncology is generally referred to as the study of brain neoplasms

. A neoplasm is defined as any new growth or tissue that serves no identifiable physiological function in the body. Many refer to neoplasms as tumors. Tumors typically arise from basically uncontrolled, quick cellular proliferation. Abnormal new tissue growth making up a tumor can be one of two things: malignant or benign. Malignant abnormal growths will eventually lead to deterioration or death. Benign tumors are of a mild type that don't threaten the health or life of the patient.

What is neurooncology? At the current time it is one of the newest oncology specialties. It treats cancers of the primary central nervous system (CNS), CNS metastatis from other solid tumor malignancies, paraneoplastic syndromes, and peripheral neuropathies resulting from chemotherapy treatment.

Neurooncology is a multi-disciplinary specialty consisting of radiation therapy, neurosurgery and a neurooncology determining chemotherapy treatment regimen for the patient.

Neurooncologists are rare. There are only a few specially educated neurooncologists available in the US. Their basic job is to treat patients with CNS cancers and/or disorders; some were listed above. When a neurooncologist is unavailable patients with CNS tumors can access the medical knowledge of medical oncologists.

A medical oncologist is a medical professional with a specialty in oncology. Oncology is the study of tumors. The National Cancer Institute defines a medical oncologist as, "A doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancer using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy, and targeted therapy. A medical oncologist often is the main health care provider for someone who has cancer. A medical oncologist also gives supportive care and may coordinate treatment given by other specialists."

Neurooncologist are doctors that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors/other tumors of and affecting the nervous system. The neurooncologist's specialty in tumors of the CNS will increase the chance for a quick, effective and accurate diagnosis followed by an effective treatment plan.
