With the inherent changes that occur to our bodies with old age

, it becomes increasingly difficult to exercise. Exercise, however, still remains vitally important to one's health, especially during the later years in life. Exercise does not have to be vigorous. For many, an intense workout simply isn't a possibility. However, there are many things seniors can do to exercise, and help their bodies stay as healthy as possible.

Exercise is crucial to physical and emotional wellbeing. Yet unfortunately, about 70% of seniors do not get any physical exercise on a regular basis. Upon aging, muscle strength typically decreases about four percent per decade. Regular exercise can help combat this loss, and also aid seniors in combating other age related illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis.

Exercise does not have to be complex. Although there are seniors who run 10K's and do triathlons for most, exercise can be as simple as taking a stroll outside. Although seemingly simple, going for a walk for 30 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Not only will one's physical health benefit, but also attitude. Exercise releases endorphins, which help people to feel happier. Getting out and walking around in the sunshine is bound to improve anyone's day.

Upon aging, the body's joints are among the first things to seriously suffer and deteriorate. Exercise which will increase the muscle around the joints will help them not to be worn away so easily. This makes for a more comfortable life, and gives seniors the ability to perform other exercises which will help them maintain good health.


If possible, one of the best exercises in which seniors can participate is swimming. Exercising in the water does much less damage to the body, since there is little or no impact involved. Seniors can get a good cardiovascular exercise without the rough impact of running, or the strain of cycling.

If you are just starting to exercise, don't give up. At any age, beginning an exercise routine is difficult. If one has been relatively sedentary for a long time, the body tends to react with a lot of soreness to an exercise plan. This is normal, and will pass. If you keep up with the exercise, your body will begin to adjust, and you will become stronger, and more capable of actually enjoying the exercise.
