Aspiring models and actors have to be very careful to avoid scams from dishonest talent agencies. There's a lot to keep in mind when trying to find the right fit for agencies, and of course it's hard enough to try and get into the business without having to worry about people pinching your money. But you can find em out if you're careful.

A good agency is fully licensed, has been around for a few years, and has a client list that you recognize. Good agencies know their stuff and are willing to help, not just pull money out of your pockets. Which isn't to say there won't be expenses. One of the first is a necessary one -- working with the agency to get your model composites made. These are like your business cards; they're what the agency uses to find work for you. So the sooner you get them done, the better.

Do You Have Determination?

The amount of work required to find a good agency is typical of a very serious work ethic that all successful models and actors have to cultivate, in addition to being confident and charismatic. They're all making it look easy, sure, but it takes a while to figure out just how much you have to apply yourself to make it look so easy.

Once you've sorted out the good from the bad and decided you're willing to work hard for this industry, you have to start thinking about what kind of work you actually want to do. There's a lot out there, naturally. You may be a perfect fit for a print ad, or have the voice for radio, or walk like a runway star. You may find yourself suitable for television or film. The agency will help you sort this stuff out, and point you to the casting directors.

Having the Right Look

A misconception in the modeling world is that agencies are always looking for that tall Ukrainian girl to be the face of the new whatever. But talent agencies are always looking for the right face among everyday people, anyone from babies on up to grandparents. You just have to have a certain something that works with what the casting director's looking for, and the agency can help you with that too, regardless of your experience.

Are you excited? Thrilled? Terrified? I guess all of those are good to experience, and all at the same time. But finding a good agency will help you sort these things out, even as you're sorting out model composites and all the steps you need to take before you get your first audition. Worry not, it'll be fun. Just prepare to work hard when those lights point your way.
