New Advances In Design Technology For 2012

2012 has been a fascinating year for design tech news

. New innovations in all areas of design technology have been finding their way into videos, conferences, news feeds, and design technology blogthroughout the year. From energy efficiency to snazzy gadgetry, engineers and inventors have been busy this year. Here is a rundown of some of this years highlights.

Clear Touch Screens

Japanese cell phone developer, Docomo, is developing a clear touch screen. Imagine seeing through your iPod screen as if it were glass, but your playlist is still displayed on the surface. The most innovative feature about this product is that the screen is touch sensitive on both the front and the back, allowing you to interact with it in an entirely new way. There is no information as of yet when this prototype may be turned loose into the market.

Self-Driving Car Legislation

California has joined a handful of other states in the US that has passed legislature regulating the testing and usage of self-driving cars. Google, which is currently testing and developing driverless car technology, was present when the bill was signed into law. Following that, Nissan unveiled a prototype for a self-driving car that is tenuously planned to release in 2015. It has been rolled out for demonstrations of its ability to park itself using an array or cameras that monitor environmental conditions.

Robotic Muscles and Shape Changing

Researchers from three prominent universities in Massachusetts are working on a type of robotic muscle technology that effectively changes the shape of the robots frame. To create movement, pulses of electricity are routed through the robot, which causes movement-inducing heat. In addition to being moveable, these robots are also incredibly durable. Though appearing to be made of mesh, they hold up and continue to perform their intended movements as theyre struck with a sledge hammer.

Interactive Robotic Technology

Traditionally robots move according to a trigger-reaction model. A command is given and the robot performs it. However, Disney is developing a form of robotics technology intended for unscripted human interaction involving playing a game of catch-and-throw. The robot uses a tracking technology powered by color and depth Kinect sensors. A colored ball is thrown, and the robot catches the ball based on its trajectory. If it fails to make a catch, the robot is programmed to express disappointment by looking down, shrugging, and shaking its head.

Practical Solutions

Also using Kinect sensors, BodyMetrics has developed software to allow women to find the perfect fit of jeans. After conducting a full body scan, the program takes about 200 measurements of a womans body. The information is sent to a sale associates iPad, and it lists out recommendations for jeans based on the data. The technology is not available for men because so far, the results are only compared to womens catalogues.

With all the developments and releases that have been lighting up design technology blogs this year, tech developers are waiting eagerly for what new inventions next year will hold.
