New Balance 890
New balance 890 general info.
New balance intends to renew their appeal in the market for neutral shoes through their 890 release. The new shoe combines their entirely new cushioning technology christened revlite with an updated outer look. It looks like the innovation shown in the designs of this company' trail shoe line is catching up with their designs of the road shoes. Though new balance's attempts to push into this niche of neutrals shoes started with the releases of the 759 and 905, the new balance 890 is and entirely different class. I had the privilege of testing these shoes for about two weeks, totaling about eighty miles of concrete, asphalt and surfaces of crushed gravel to confirm if the quality of the introduced revlite cushioning matches what was advertised.
New balance 890 sole unit.
The NB 890 is the new foam introduced into this shoe and I have to say that it still retains its responsiveness after sustained use. It is almost ten percent lighter than other foams like the Nike lunar foam and it is firm enough for some mild overpronators. My first impression with this shoe was such that I dumped my other pairs and took it in as my official road runner. Due to its slight weight, it is ideal for speed runs and tempo work while it has enough cushioning to survive the rigors of a long run. It has an extra drop from the heel to the toes of about 12mm and this makes it perfect for those runners looking for more ease in transition.
The 890 has a simple yet functional sole. It consists of a thin outsole made of carbon rubber which hardly got any wear AFTER CLOCKING ALMOST 80 MILES. The grooves etched into the sole to provide grip also don't pick up pebbles when running over trails or gravel.
New Balance 890 Upper.
New balance used names of some illustrious athletes it sponsors to name these runners. The 890's male specific version is tagged with the surname of Andrew baddley, a British long racing Olympian. The female specific version is christened after Jenny Simpson, an American Olympic star. It is my opinion that this piece of innovation is just what other shoe companies need to do to get the young people interested in the sport. It thrust me back to the time in middle school when I was obsessed with having a pair of Michael Jordan's, Hardaway or Barkley's basketball shoes. Associating these shoes with those well known athletes is a master stroke; these are just the kind of high speed trainers that any Olympian should use to evaluate performance.
The 890's upper primarily consists of overlays which assist in keeping the foot snuggly inside the shoes hence giving the wear a feeling of being tied into the shoes. Another small thing that caught my attention was the use by new balance of flat laces and lace holes which help make the shoes and the laces look united. Many shoes companies have over the last decade experimented with numerous lace designs in an attempt to prevent the laces from loosening. The lace system used in the 890s doesn't give such problems hence making the shoes very reliable for running.
New balance 890 opinion.
The introduction of the New Balance 890 is bound to change the game in the lightweight neutral running shoes category. I found the revlite foam in the New Balance Running Shoes to be the best cushioning system in market. From the shoe's elegant upper to the attention paid to detail in the lace and tongue designs, the 890 is the perfect example of a basic shoe enhanced by innovative lightweight technology.
