, the carmaker is set to rival the Mercedes-Benz CLS as the dominant model in the gran tourer segment.

On sale from October 15, the new 6 Series coupe is longer and lower than previous versions to give a more sleek and powerful appearance. Engine choice is restricted to two turbocharged petrol and a single twin turbocharged diesel known as 650i, 640i, 640d. Theres also a newly developed chassis and a plethora of driver assistance technology. The German manufacturer is aiming for around 1,100 sales in the first 12 months with the 640d expected to make up around 90% of sales.

At 4,894mm in length, the new model is 74mm longer than its predecessor, while the wheelbase has stretched similarly, to 2,855mm. The car has also grown by 39mm in width, and now measures 1,894mm across, while 5mm have been shaved off its height. Even with the lower roofline BMW has managed to increase the amount of headroom, both front and back, while all seats have increased adjustment capabilities which provides even more headroom, shoulder room, and elbow room than before.

Access to the rear seats is through an one-touch Easy Entry function, which moves the seat as far forward as possible. The boot can accommodate two medium hard-shell case, flight case. Or three 46inch golf bags. Theres also a ski hatch between the rear seats for the adventurous type.

the new 6 Series Coupe engine line-up offers motorists an impressive balance between power and economy. The single diesel choice is the 640d which is powered by a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged six-cylinder unit which can kick out 313hp at 4,400rpm. This power, which comes in spades from about 1,500rpm, ensures that it can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 5.5 seconds on its way to an electronically top speed of 155mph.

Theres some clever engineering at play which sees the use of two sequential turbochargers, one smaller than the other, that provide a near continuous wave of torque from low revs. A complex arrangement of waste gates in the exhaust ensure the smooth transition from one turbo to another as the revs increase. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is fitted as standard, along with Auto Start-Stop engine technology and active air flaps behind the classic kidney grille. Yet for all the dramatic performance the 640d is also highly fuel efficient with CO2 emissions of just 145g/km and a combined fuel economy figure of 51.4mpg. Compared to the Mercedes CLS320CDI, the 640d is more powerful and quicker in a sprint, yet it is cleaner and more fuel efficient which means it sits in VED band F with a BIK of 22%. Impressive stuff.

While not as fuel efficient as the diesel, the two petrol engines can also outgun and out perform its main competitors. The range-topping 650i comes with a 4.4-litre eight cylinder twin turbocharged engine which delivers 407hp between 5,500 and 6,400rpm. This power means the car can crack the 5 second barrier in its 0-62mph sprint (4.9 seconds), which is comfortably quicker than a SL500. Top speed is restricted to 155mph, and comes with an average combined fuel consumption of 26.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 246g/km, which places it in VED Band L and a BIK of 35%.

This leaves the 640i, which comes with a surprisingly fuel efficient six-cylinder 3.0-litre engine which uses single turbocharger technology alongside petrol direct injection with VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. This engine propels the BMW 640i Coup from zero to 62mph in 5.4 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The BMW 640i Coup achieves 36.2mpg on the combined cycle, while CO2 emissions are only 181g/km. This means it sits in VED band I and a BIK figure of 29%.

All three versions also come with the fuel saving ECO PRO mode. By a touch of the Drive Dynamic Control button ECO PRO mode tweaks the engine management system, accelerator mapping and gearshift characteristics to favour a relaxed, low revving driving style.

Standard for the 640i Coup and 640d Coup are 18inch light alloy wheels, while the 650i Coup comes as standard with 19inch wheels. All derivatives feature Dakota leather upholstery, eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, electric seat adjustment with memory, BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation system, Xenon headlights, LED front fog lights and front and rear Park Distance Control.

The Coupe can also be specified with M Sport trim, this adds the M aerodynamic body-styling package, 19inch M light alloy wheels, dark chrome exhaust tailpipes, High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim and black brake 8 callipers. Inside Anthracite headlining, Aluminium Hexagon trim, Sport seats and M Sport multifunction leather rimmed steering wheel are fitted. To co-inside with the coupe launch the 6 Series convertible can also now be ordered with the M Sport package.

Overall, the LED lights are widely used most new cars such as LED Dome Lights, LED Daytime Running Lights, and will come out with even more innovation in the future.
