New Born Head Problems
BUMPS (Prominences) Back of Head (External Occipital Protuberances)
Your baby's head isn't a perfect sphere. It has bumps that existed from the earliest moments of its formation. You probably won't notice these bumps until the baby bangs her head and you feel all over to be certain that everything's all right. Since most babies bump their heads when they fall backward, the bump most often discovered by parents is the one in the center of the back of the head. This normal bump is the external occipital protuberance, and can be felt on every baby's skull.
Adults have them, too, but because babies lack the bulky neck and head muscles of the adult, there's less "meat" covering the infant's bumps, and they're easier to find. Side of Head (Parietal Bossing) Besides the bump on the back of the head, babies have two other types of normal bumps, which are situated on either side of the top of the head. These are the parietal tubers (parietal means wall; tuber equals swelling) and they can vary greatly in size from person to person. Some babies have tiny parietal tubers that are barely noticeable; others have such prominent swellings that they're called parietal horns.
NORMAL FONTANEL
The infant skull has two soft spots that you usually can feel with your fingers, The one in the back the posterior fontanel is sometimes to small to feel, but that particular fontanel is of no importance. The important fontanel the anterior is the one situated where the two bones of the forehead and the two bones of the side of the head meet. Molding of the skull can temporarily cover up the anterior fontanel, but once the molding has subsided, it should be very easy to feel. The anterior fontanel is diamond-shaped and, if you watch it closely, you'll see it pulse with each heartbeat. This pulsing action is responsible for the name fontanel, which actually means little fountain. The anterior fontanels are extremely variable in size and shape and the point in time when they, like the posterior fontanel, close up.
The length and width of the anteriors range from about 0.6 to 3-6 centimeters, but they usually measure about 2.1 centimeters. Unusually large or small fontanels are sometimes related to certain diseases, which is why doctors measure them so carefully. When the baby has a normal head circumference, shape, and feel, and is otherwise normal, there should be no concern if the fontanels vary a bit above or below the average.
