When it comes to new car deal negotiations, studies have indicated that the telephone

is indeed a very effective instrument in helping conclude transactions quickly. This is particularly true for those buyers that do not have a vehicle they want to exchange and are keen on either making payments upfront, or who want to utilise car finance schemes.

However, basic ground rules of clearly making up your mind on what vehicle you wish to go for, checking whether the same is in stock with the dealer and test driving the short-listed vehicle all stand, and should be completed prior to any negotiations you want to initiate over the telephone. Make sure you do all this at a dealer showroom and be prepared with information on dealer mark ups, special incentive schemes for the sales person, dealer bonuses and so on before you pick up the phone and call another dealer to negotiate.

The process is not very different to what you would have said had you met the dealer in person. You must begin by saying that you are aware of the cost price to the dealer and that you are willing to pay a premium, which could be about 3-5 percent, and are keen to settle the transaction at the earliest. Volunteer to give your credit card details to the person so that he gets to know your seriousness. Tell him that if he is agreeable on the price you have indicated, you are willing to pay a deposit or else would be calling some other dealer. The main point here is to emphasise your keenness to conclude the transaction since all other details of the process have already been completed to your satisfaction, and the only hurdle to the swift conclusion of the deal is the price.

Make sure that you do not fall into the trap of being called to the showroom to finalise the matter and also indicate that you do not wish to spend too much time either speaking on phone. You stand a far greater chance of getting the price you want when you play one dealer against the other. The salesman also does not want to lose the opportunity of finalising the sale since he is getting an order on the phone and his time, as well as effort, is relatively less and well worth the deal in question.


If you have managed to conclude the transaction as per your desire, ask the dealer sales person to fax you the contract form so that you can go over the terms and conditions, before giving him the credit card number. Upon receiving it, you can give them the credit card number for the deposit amount they want to take from the card.

When checking the contract, if you come across any additional charges that you find were not discussed, make a note of them and take it up with the dealer sales person immediately on the phone. It is better to get those things out of the way as soon as possible.
