From April 1, 2010, new cars that pollute more are going to cost more in the UK

. The government has decided to introduce a first year one off 'showroom tax' for cars that emit more CO2. Currently, a car with CO2 emissions of 255g/km has to pay GBP 440 in road tax. From April 1 the first year's road tax will be GBP 950, which will drop to GBP 455 in subsequent years. The government wants to discourage people from buying cars that are heavy polluters.
