New Delivery Companies Fill The Gap Left By Loss Of Valued Local Services

With new warnings that up to 3,000 post offices could close over the next two years

, alternative methods of parcel delivery look set to continue to thrive, as they fill the gaps left by the loss of these valuable community services. News that members of the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters face a cut in their pay as a result of the Post Office announcing plans to reduce the core payments it makes to them has led to suggestions that many sub-postmasters could be forced to give up their businesses due to financial hardship.

And this comes at the same time as the length of queues at many post offices shows no sign of shrinking, as the offices which remain open already appear to be struggling to cope with longer queues created by an ongoing programme of closures which has seen thousands of post offices removed from the network. Indeed, if more closures do happen, it is inevitable that the queues will get longer at those which do remain. But its easily possible to avoid these queues altogether by using an online parcel delivery service.

Many of these businesses will collect direct from your business or home address too, so eliminating the need for a time-consuming trip to the post office. So its understandable why their services appeal to many home workers and people running small businesses in rural areas.

Parcel delivery companies are bringing on board more modern technology which enables them to operate highly efficient collection and delivery networks even in those isolated regions. And in many areas, these have become a lifeline to residents and businesses which use home delivery services.

Delivery companies have been quick to react when communities have lost their main access to a national parcel delivery service. In many cases, they have expanded their own networks of depots in order to better serve all areas of the country.

Alongside this, they have invested in the latest package-handling and tracking technology. This has meant that collection and delivery services have been able to achieve the greater efficiencies demanded as the amount of packages they handle has continued to increase.

The loss of a valued community-based service will always be felt among members of that community. But if a suitable alternative comes along, which can take up the slack, and even offer a more responsive express delivery service than was available before, then that has to be progress.
