New Director of Campus Police begins duties Aug. 30

Tom Saccenti, who has a proven track record of leading and training within a police department, has been named Marietta College's Chief of Police. He begins his duties on Aug. 30 and replaces Dave Valkinburg, who resigned in May.

Saccenti is responsible for the overall planning, direction and management of a comprehensive college police department charged with maintaining the safety of faculty, staff and students. He is also responsible for directing uniform patrol leadership, education and outreach programs, accreditation, emergency planning and recovery, victim assistance and parking enforcement on a campus that serves nearly 1,500 students.

"The safety and well being of our students and employees is of the highest priority on the Marietta College campus," said Dr. Bob Pastoor, Vice President for Student Life. "During our national search we recognized early on that Tom was an exceptional candidate and we are delighted to have someone with his experience and knowledge leading the College's Police Department. He is excited to begin working with our current officers, who have done an outstanding job of maintaining a high level of service during the absence of a chief."

Marietta College Officer Jim Weaver has served as the interim chief since May 10.

Before joining Marietta, Saccenti was the Director of Campus Safety at Trine University in Angola, Ind., since 2008. He has also worked as the Chief of Police for the Pioneer (Ohio) Police Department from 2007-09, and as a detective for the Castalia (Ohio) Police Department from 2002-07.

"Marietta College provides me the opportunity to continue my law enforcement career in a new and exciting setting," Saccenti said. "I was well aware of the exceptional academic reputation of Marietta, but after visiting I also fell in love with the scenic campus and the charm of the city. But what really sold me on the job are the officers in the department, who are working hard every day to protect the campus. They are a dedicated and talented collection of people who are already doing an outstanding job for Marietta College. I am excited to get the opportunity to work with each and everyone of them."

Saccenti has experience as a patrolman, detective, hostage negotiator and traffic officer. He earned an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Marion Technical College in 1999 and graduated from the Police Academy in 2000. He added a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and another in Psychology from Trine in 2010. He's also enrolled in Trine's graduate program for Criminal Justice Administration.

Saccenti and his wife Sonya have two children, Secily, 3, and Micah, 1.
