Last year, the New England Patriots' offense took a major hit when wide receiver

Wes Welker suffered a left knee injury: a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The injury came during the last game of the final season, Week 17, against the Houston Texans. That type of injury can often take months upon months to heal, but Welker revealed he may be back to top form sooner than expected. Welker passed the team's physical and nearly immediately took the field to start practicing with the Patriots. According to NFL.com, Welker spoke about returning to the game and he explained that he worked hard the entire offseason to get himself in top shape.

Welker has come a long way since he went undrafted in the 2004 NFL Draft. He played one game on the roster of the San Diego Chargers before signing with the Miami Dolphins. Welker stayed in Miami for the rest of the 2004 season as well as the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He began his career with the Patriots in 2007 and instantly took on the role of a starter. Last season, he played in 14 games and started 13, tallying 123 receptions, 1,348 yards and four touchdowns.

Having Welker healthy is even more important in light of the recent announcement from wide receiver David Patten. The nearly 37-year-old announced his retirement from football after participating in four of the Patriots' practices this offseason, and he cited physical shortcomings in his reasons for retiring. Patten didn't play during the 2009 season, but he has a history with the Patriots. He played for the Patriots from 2001 to 2005, which encompassed the Patriots' three Super Bowl Championships. 2002 marked a career-high 824 receiving yards for Patton. He also played for the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints.

The Patriots could be dealing with another retirement, because sources are reporting that linebacker Derrick Burgess will also be retiring. According to ESPN, he did not report for the start of the Patriots' training camp. The 31-year-old signed a new one-year contract with the Patriots earlier this year. Last year was Burgess' first with the Patriots, and he played in 16 games and started six, accumulating 25 tackles, five sacks and one forced fumble. He has been in the league since 2001, playing with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2001 to 2004 and the Oakland Raiders from 2005 to 2008.

Many who get New England Patriots tickets likely do so to see star quarterback Tom Brady in action. Brady is reportedly looking for a new contract, and some news reports have said the negotiations are strained. He spoke with ESPN and refuted the reports, expressing enjoyment in the game of football and his time with the Patriots instead of talking about the money he thinks he deserves. Brady is set to make $6.5 million this season, which is markedly below what other top quarterbacks earn. Since he is the face of the franchise in many ways, chances are Brady will get a new contract soon.
