New Fees for Passports and Passport Renewals

One hurdle to getting a passport has always been cost. Now, that hurdle has gotten just a little bit higher. The Department of State recently announced that they will be increasing fees for passports and passport renewal, as well as for other passport-related services.

Here's a rundown of what the new fee structure will look like. These changes go into effect July 13.

New passports

The fee to apply will go up from $75 to $110. There's also a $25 acceptance fee, so the total amount you'll have to be will be $135.

Passport Renewals

The $75 passport renewal fee we pay right now will go up to $110.

Passports for Children

Getting a passport for a child under the age of 18 costs $60, but when the fees change that will go up to $80. Total cost with the $25 acceptance fee will be $105.

Passport Cards

Passport cards are still a cheaper option than a regular passport, but they are not immune from the proposed fee hikes. Passport cards for adults are going up by $10, from $20 to $30. Passport cards for kids are going up $5, from $10 to $15. You'll also need to pay a $25 acceptance fee if you need to apply in person.

Adding Pages

Starting July 13th, adding visa pages to the back of your passport will no longer be a free service. Instead, it'll cost you $82.

File Search Fee

The fee for a file search, which allows the Department of State to look for proof of citizenship for you if you don't have anything on hand to submit, will increase from $60 to $150.

Expedited Service

Thankfully, the cost for expediting your passport application or passport renewal is not going up. It will remain at $60 per application, plus $14.95 for overnight delivery.
