New For Walking And Driving, The Garmin 3790t And 3760t
New to the market from Garmin are a couple of stylish and feature rich GPS satellite
navigation units for the road, the top end Nuvi 3790T and its only slightly lesser sibling the Nuvi 3760T. Both add something new to the user experience.
They both have a very large 800x480 pixel resolution multi touch TFT screen that takes up most of the area on the front of the unit, and has a very vivid backlight. The units are both super skinny at less than half an inch thick. The whole device only measures four point eight by two point nine inches in both cases, and can be used in either orientation, horizontal or vertical.
A 4 hour rechargeable lithium ion battery keeps you on the road, although if you are walking with it around keep in mind that neither unit is water proof. Both slim units have very up to date high GPS sensitivity receivers.
As you travel with either nuvis, they have the capacity to learn your most traveled routes and work to decrease your journey times by figuring out where the traffic is and directing you around it better. This system is new from Garmin and is called trafficTrends.
Not satisfied with learning your routes, the GPS devices will also work out where your destination is as you drive or walk, you don't even need to put an end goal in. While it's working on that, it can also re route automatically around stationary traffic, accidents or road works.
One key difference between the two devices is that the nuvi 3790T adds voice command technology over the lower range model, allowing you to control the unit without removing your hands from the wheel with commands such as 'find address'.
Both of these GPS devices have speakers built in to allow them to issue instructions out loud, via a selection of available voices. A new feature is the ability to speak actual names of streets and suggest the correct lane to be in when approaching a junction with multiple choice of road lanes.
Similarly, both units allow you to connect your mobile phone through Bluetooth wireless technology and make hands free calls using the Nuvis built in microphone and speaker, you can dial using the Nuvis touch screen keypad and save contacts for one touch access.
Subscription free traffic information is provided with both units, through the FM radio network. This allows you to receive alerts about traffic delays, incidents or construction areas and tap the Nuvis screen to detour around the problem.
Apart from only one other difference the two new Nuvis have the same specifications. That difference is that the Nuvi 3790T shows a three dimensional view of cities, illustrating exactly the lay of the buildings, to let you choose the right direction based on visual recognition of the area you are in.
Both units come as standard with a good selection of preloaded maps but can also accept new map content, downloaded from the internet onto the built in solid state memory in the Nuvi or onto an optional microSD card.
One key feature to illustrate on both devices is the addition of Garmins ecoRoute function that tracks fuel usage and also calculates a more fuel efficient route for you on demand.
