Ireland is a beautiful country complete with rolling hillsides, green gorges and sparkling waters. Visitors are attracted to the main towns of Dublin and Shannon, but t is heard of for tourists to rent cars and traverse the landscape to marvel over the natural beauty there. But Ireland has been hit especially hard with the economic crisis, and the revamping of the decrepit motorway system hasn't done anything to help. The country set aside scarce funds to bring the road network into the twenty first century and boost the ailing economy. The work was begun, but the AA motoring service are now criticising the country as you are now able to drive from sea to sea without a pee', as the money has dwindled and rather than putting petrol stations and refreshment areas along the road, the authorities have instead added signs along the road side to direct drivers to nearby towns that have petrol stations.

The group said it was unacceptable and downright ridiculous for drivers not to be able to stop for a drink or to use the facilities on the entire one hundred and fifty five mile route between Irelands big cities, Dublin and Cork, even if it wasn't from a comfort point, but purely from a safety vantage.

"It's a pretty poor half measure in all honesty; it does rather devalue the motorway network. I guess sign of the times, they are pleading that they simply don't have the money." AA Director of Policy Conor Faughnan told RTE radio.

The point is that in the current climate and with petrol costs reaching an all time high in 2011, we cannot afford to detour to make petrol stops that could be miles away from our route, adding to the cost of our trip. And also what if we need to visit the loo?

The Irish authorities have argued that by putting up signs to warn drivers, they are being open and honest and giving them alternative arrangements.
