New Piano For Sale: Classifieds Vs. The Store

If you're interested in finding a new piano for sale

, you're probably going to go in one of two directions: the classifieds/online auction sites or an actual dealer or retail store. Both of options are available and they each have a few advantages. But there are disadvantages to each method as well, which you should be aware of before you lay out your money. Buying one of these instruments is expensive, after all. It isn't something to be taken lightly. Whether you're purchasing one to further your own musical exploration or you just think it would look nice in the living room, here are some things to remember.

Buying From a Store

If you find a new piano for sale in a good store, there are several compelling reasons to buy it there rather than looking for a private seller. One of the biggest reasons is that it will probably come with some form of buyer's protection. In fact, you shouldn't buy retail if it doesn't. Look for some kind of manufacturer's warranty and if you can find an extended warranty from the store, you might want to take advantage of that as well. A good store should be happy to tune the instrument for you as well as arrange for delivery. Additionally, some retailers will have an excellent trade in policy on instruments purchased from them, meaning you could easily upgrade in the future without losing money.

Buying Privately

For the most part, you will have a hard time finding a new piano for sale in the classifieds. But some online outlets -- while ostensibly a sort of worldwide yard sale -- often have brand new instruments for sale from private dealers. The biggest benefit to buying this way is that you may get a better deal than you could from a store. This is simply through elimination of the overhead a store has to cover. Unfortunately, it may be more difficult to find one with a good warranty. There is also the danger of fakes, which is always a risk when buying from someone online. They are more common than you might think.

Decision

If you're looking for a used instrument, buying from an online auction site or someone in your town may be a good idea. You'll save money and you may be able to find older models not available in stores anymore. If you're looking for a new piano for sale, however, you would be better served by shopping from a traditional music store. The benefits far outweigh the negatives (the only one of which is the higher price, which is largely mitigated by factors such as warranty). Find a store near you and give them a try.
