New Ring Motor Allows Wide Flexibility for the Designer

To meet the emerging demand for electrically-powered aerospace fans, ThinGap announced the latest member of its 14-inch Ring Motor series, the 14030. Developed under contract to DARPA using ThinGap patented technology, the 14030 produces up to 60kW. The 14030 is extremely smooth, since ThinGap's proprietary design produces no rotor-to-stator magnetic forces, no cogging, no eddy current losses and no hysteresis. A 13-4 PH stainless steel rotor and magnets mounted inside the outer face of the ring allows for high rpm operation, up to 10,000 rpm.

"The ring motor configuration allows wide flexibility for the designer" notes Matt Cheresh, ThinGap's VP of Sales and Marketing. "Fan blades can be mounted inside the circumference of the rotor for high speed operation, or across/outside the rotor for lower speed operation. With inside fan blades, 400 to 600 pounds of thrust can be generated, depending on the fan design and temperature requirements.

In a ThinGap motor, the stator is formed of laminated, precision-etched copper sheet, resulting in a very thin (0.15") wall stator. This stator geometry, the airflow generated by the rotor moving on both sides of the coil, and the lack of eddy current losses allow for excellent cooling.
