New Testament Study Guide And Christianity
The New Testament is the second major scripture of the Christian faith
, after the Old Testament. The Old Testament is the original Hebrew Bible, but the New Testament centers around the birth, life, and ministry of Jesus Christ. Among Christians, the New Testament is often given more value because of its association with Jesus Christ.
The New Testament consists of the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; the Acts of the Apostles; the epistles of the Apostles (primarily Paul); and the Revelation of John. These writings contain information about Christianity when it was in its early days.
All four gospels in New Testament, and many of the epistles, describe events in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. From second century onward, the gospels started being known by the name of the person who authored it (e.g., The Gospel of Matthew or The Gospel of Luke).
The Gospel of Matthew is ascribed to the Apostle Matthew. This gospel starts with the genealogy of Jesus. It contains many details of the birth of Jesus, including the visit of the magi while He was still a young child. After relating many details of Jesus life and ministry, the Gospel of Matthew ends with the resurrection of Jesus and his commissioning of the disciples.
The Gospel of Mark is credited to Mark the Evangelist. This gospel starts with the preaching of John the Baptist and his baptizing of Jesus. The Gospel of Luke is ascribed to Luke the Evangelist. Like the Gospel of Matthew, this gospel begins with the birth and childhood of Jesus, but it also discusses John the Baptist. It ends with the resurrected Jesus ascending into heaven. Like Matthew, John was one of the twelve apostles.
The Gospel of John begins with a symbolic prologue concerning the identity of Jesus Christ (the Word) and his relationship to God and to mankind. While it relates many of the same stories contained in the other gospels, Johns gospel emphasizes the miraculous powers of Jesus.
The 13 epistles written by Paul are some of the earliest Christian writings, actually predating some of the gospels. While they do not appear in chronological order, any New Testament study guide will attempt to discuss them in such order. The New Testament also contains epistles sent by the Apostles Peter and John, and others by James (the brother of the Lord) and Jude. The Acts of the Apostles provides the historical context for the epistles.
The final section of the New Testament consists of the Revelation of John on the Isle of Patmos, which symbolically relates events of that time and of the end of the world.
