New Wirral Electricity Cable For Western Link Route Revealed

A brand new electricity cable is set to be fitted across the Wirral peninsula.

Both National Grid and SP Transmission stated that the construction of the 33km high voltage line would be planned later in the year with the line set to be operational by the end of 2015.

Furthermore, a Liverpool Echo report stated that the new line will start at Leasowe, before moving underground towards the east of Heswall and Neston before making its way south-west to run between Burton and Puddington towards a National Grid plant at Deeside, where it will link up with the existing transmission system.

This announcement has come as a result of concerns that the UK needs to put more money into its energy infrastructure to be able to meet future energy needs.

PricewaterhouseCoopers recently published report highlights the fact that future power supply in both the UK and Europe could outweigh demand by 2030.

The brand new Wirral cable forms part of Western Link, a major scheme which was designed to help to extend the lifespan of the UKs existing energy network.

As well as this, a major subsea power cable will be installed on the western parts of the UK which will help to connect Scotland with both England and Wales.

Western Link is set to receive over 400km of high voltage direct current cable with converter stations based at Hunterston, North Ayrshire in Scotland and another station located at Connahs Quay in Flintshire, Wales.

The main aims of the projects are to supply the UK with another 2,000 megawatts of capacity onto the transmission system, thus increasing the demand for a cable assembly manufacturer.

The Wirral cable will run across farmland and will look set to miss sites of special and scientific interest.

Project manager Peter Roper said to the Echo: "Our priority is to minimise disruption to the communities where we are constructing this cable and to the land through which it passes.

"Before we start construction we will work closely with the local authorities to ensure that effects on traffic are minimised and noise and dust controlled. We will also hold a series of public information events to let local people know what is planned in their area."

Furthermore, a discussion on the plans for the cable, with local councils, MPs, landowners and other bodies such as Natural England is already taking place.

"The feedback received, together with information from further technical and environmental investigations we have undertaken, has enabled us to refine the route to the one published today," Mr Roper stated.
