In the US, Times Square is the place to be for New Year's Eve. However, if you'd like your New Year's celebration to have a little bit more of an international flavor, here are 5 great places around the word to celebrate:

Edinburgh, Scotland- In Scotland, New Year's Eve is part of a traditional celebration called Hogmanay, which lasts four days. In Edinburgh, that means 4 days of music, drinking and other celebrations, starting on December 30th. Highlights include a torchlight procession through the city, a street party and a midnight rendition of "Old Lang Syne."

Berlin, Germany- German beer and what Berlin claims is the biggest open-air party in the world-need I say more?

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: New Year's Eve on Rio's Copacabana beach is an all-night party with a massive fireworks display over the ocean. It's traditional to wear white for good luck! Make sure you obtain a Brazilian visa before you travel.

Niagara Falls, Canada: The Canadian side of the Falls is the best place to see the Winter Festival of Lights and the New Year's Eve firework display. You can either stay at a hotel on the Canadian side, or stay on the New York side and drive across for the New Year's Eve celebrations.

Reykjavik, Iceland: For New Year's Eve, the citizens of Reykjavik light up the Arctic winter with lots of bonfires and fireworks.

Of course, if you're heading out of the country for New Year's, you will need a passport. The Department of State's expedited passport service still takes at least 3 weeks. If you want to get your passport in time, you'll need to make an appointment at regional passport agency office or engage the services of a private passport expediting company like Rush My Passport.
