It's that time of year again! Time to look forward with anticipation to a new year and to set new resolutions that I know you'll follow through on right? Okay without further delay, here are a few tips on how to make good on your new years resolution ideas.

1. Get specific on exactly why you are setting a new years resolution.

The key to making your resolutions stick is to get very specific. Don't simply set a resolution that's vague - I want to lose weight this year. Be much more specific - I want to lose 20 lbs. over the next three months. This level of detail will allow you to focus and increase the likelihood that you reach your goals dramatically. Also, make sure that you understand why this goal is important to you. Really dig deep on this question. Example - Why do I want to lose 20 lbs. in three months? How will I benefit from this? How will I feel when I lose 20 lbs.? If you need more help try these resolution defining exercises.


2. Plan, plan, plan.

Once you lock on a new years resolution idea you have to plan on how exactly you are going to make it happen! You can't simply call it a victory because you set a resolution. Think exactly how you will make sure you make room for the types of actions you'll need to take to make good on your new years resolution ideas. If you don't do this important step you are engaging in nothing more than wishful thinking.

3. Take Action.

For many this is the hardest part. Thinking of new years resolution ideas is easy but this is where the rubber meets the road. When I first decided to lose weight, I set a resolution to walk each day. The first day was a baby step for me and I walked maybe 100 yards. Not much to brag about, but that first small step got me going and I know walk 3 - 4 miles a day and I have lost 16 lbs.

4. Develop Accountability!

If you're having trouble following through on your new years resolution ideas consider sharing your resolution with your spouse, best friend, or family. This is a great way to establish accountability and to keep you motivated to take action! See if you share your resolutions with others, they will get vested in your resolution and most likely ask you how you're progressing on your new years resolution ideas. Be prepared! This can be painful at times but that may be exactly what you need to make good on your promise to yourself to make this the best year yet!
