New York, The City That Never Sleeps

You may have heard of the term the city that never sleeps

. Though many cities have claimed the expression as a fitting description of their locale, the phrase remains well suited to the city of New York because it rarely, if at all, ever does go to sleep. The city of New York is home to more than eight million documented citizens. This does not include the more than a million tourists that visit the huge metropolis annually. So why is New York regarded as the true city that never sleeps?

Of the eight million citizens that New York City has, roughly a quarter of them work or study at night. This means that a sizable portion of the citys population is energetically going about their normal activities at night. Gazing out towards the immense skyscrapers that dominate the New York City skyline, you would notice that the lights in almost all of their windows are lit which means that somebody inside is carrying out normal routines like the day-job employees do. This is especially true with office buildings in downtown Manhattan where business operations are on a twenty four-hours and seven days a week cycle.

The streets are also still full of cars going in either direction. Though it may not be as tumultuous as what you may experience during the day, the volume of cars on the road in New York City at night is still very large. Most shops, delis, and grocery stores are still open even in the wee hours of the morning. This means that you can have a really early breakfast or a very late dinner in one of these shops.

If you are currently staying in a New York City vacation apartment within the Manhattan borough, you would definitely feel the vibrancy and life even in the unholy hours of the morning. From any vantage point, you would see that New York City is constantly alive and teeming with people who are going about their tasks as if it is daytime.

From your New York City vacation apartment, you would also notice the headlights of countless cars driving down the road or crossing the well-lit Brooklyn Bridge. Delivery trucks can also be observed parked in streets as they unload their cargo to replenish the stocks at some stores.

Because of the seemingly endless vibrant activity in the Big Apple, which you can definitely perceive from your New York City vacation apartment, you will understand why it is called the city that never sleeps. In fact, only the city of New York can truly lay claim to the title because its nightlife is almost exactly the same as during daytime.
