New Zealand Maori is a rugby union team that traditionally plays teams touring New Zealand. A prerequisite for playing in this team is that the player is to have Mori whakapapa or genealogy. In the past this rule was not strictly applied. In the past non-Mori players who looked Mori were often selected in the team. These included a few Island players and a couple of African descent. Today all players have their ancestry verified before selection in the team.

Although the rugby union team does not compete in the World Cup, it competed in the Churchill Cup, which it won in 2004 and 2006.

New Zealand Maori also replaced the Junior All Blacks in the 2008 IRB Pacific Nations Cup, where they were undefeated champions, narrowly beating Australia A in the final game of the tournament. The team did not compete in the 2008 Churchill Cup.

Ireland summer tour squad members Tom Court and Damien Varley are set to feature for the New Zealand Barbarians as replacements in Saturday's match against the New Zealand Maori in Whangarei (kick-off 4.35pm local time/5.35am Irish time).

Coached by Bryce Woodward, the NZ Baa Baas' line-up includes six All Blacks, one of them being Blues prop John Afoa who will be tried out in the hooker role at the request of the New Zealand management.

Woodward said: "We are all about to be part of something special and for these guys, it's a real privilege to be asked to share in the tradition and honour of assembling and playing with the New Zealand Barbarians.

"We're very excited that in the spirit of the Barbarians tradition, two of the Irish internationals are joining us."

Court and Varley will rejoin the Irish touring party on Sunday in Rotorua, where next Friday's New Zealand Maori v Ireland XV fixture will be held.
