After a thrilling victory at Dunedin, a mad cap session on the 2nd day when they were bowled out for 99 at the Basin effectively shut them out of the game and provided Pakistan an opportunity to square the series on a platter. McIntosh, Flynn, the now dropped Fulton and Elliot have all failed miserably to stay at the wicket, let alone think of making runs. Only the evergreen Ross Taylor and Daniel Vettori, with small contributions from McCullum have managed to avoid large scale embarrassment for the Black Caps.

When compared to their wafer thin batting, it is their fine bowling attack that has kept the Kiwis alive in this series. Iain O'Brien - who announced his retirement at the Basin - has bowled with fire and hostility, supplemented by the ever nagging Daryl Tuffey and the man for all occasions - Daniel Vettori. The fielding has been top class from the Kiwis and if they manage to produce another combined effort in the field, then a series victory is not beyond their expectations. Watling may be pushed to open the innings alongside McIntosh, with Guptill dropping down the ranks. With a grassy track expected at Napier, Vettori has decided to bat at No. 6 and they are mulling with the idea of playing 5 bowlers. O'Brien had an injury scare during practice today and looks a doubtful starter, if he does not recover then Tim Southee will take his place.

Napier is traditionally a batsmen's paradise - Last year Gambhir batted for more than 9 hours to save the Test - but this time, the McLean Park curator Phil Stoyanoff has decided to leave a fair smattering of grass which will definitely help the seamers. The grass wont be cut, which means that a definite result will be possible at Napier. Fairly good weather with the occasional odd shower is predicted for this Test.
