New vehicle featuring wheelchair lift is showcased

There a number of challenges associated with having limited or no use of certain parts of the body and accessing buildings, vehicles and particular outdoor areas are just some of them.

However, thanks to the advent of the wheelchair lift, some of these problems have been alleviated.

Such technology can be fitted in a range of circumstances and a platform lift is the kind of item that can been seen next to steps and doors in many places these days.

One vehicle that now features a wheelchair lift is the Cariboo Draft Horse and Driving Club's new mobility wagon, the Williams Lake Tribune reports.

The platform lift was designed and built by club member Curt Tugnum, who recently delivered the product to a festival.

A battery-operated device, it is situated on the back of the truck and it can be used to lift up anyone who is challenged in terms of their mobility.

Also, the vehicle has been adapted so that people in wheelchairs can sit wherever they like because the seats are removable.

Indeed, up to five wheelchairs can be accommodated.

Commenting on his creation, Mr Tugnum said: "It works out to a very flexible wagon."

Meanwhile, discussing his reasons for taking on the challenge, he added: "We saw people who chose to or had to sit by the roadside and just not be able to enjoy a ride like this, so that's more or less where the inspiration came from."

He went on to suggest that other riding and driving clubs should ensure they have mobility wagons built.

Mr Tugnum pointed out that many countries, including the UK and others in Europe, provide such things but his home country of Canada is lacking in them, which is a shame for those with disabilities in the North American country who would like to make use of such provisions.
