Newbie Skateboarding Faults - Ways To Avoid Them
You're not alone - everyone sucks at skateboarding the first time they try it
. Naturally, some will learn the basics faster than other people. But some will need more practice to get to a comfortable place with the balance required and overall feel of skating. Every new skateboarder is taught tips and tricks to help make the learning process easier. Next, we'll go over some helpful hints you can use when you shop for that first board and then head-out on your own.
You might need a little time to know which foot goes in front and which is best in the rear. Whether you are right handed or left handed doesn?t really come into play here like it would in other sports. Instead you need to figure out which of your legs is dominant and which isn?t. How do you approach things? Which foot do you normally use when you kick a ball? Which leg do you normally begin with when you go up some stairs? Which leg/foot do you always use to catch yourself if you ever start to fall? The foot you use for all of these things will almost always be the foot that you keep on the back part of the board. How you stand has less to do with which way you want to face as you move on the board and more to do with which leg is stronger and sturdier.
Don't be afraid to go slowly. You'll see a lot of beginner skateboarders trying to do those cool tricks before they really have the proper skills. This is only good for feeling discouraged and irritated and to be injured. Successfully skateboarding a couple blocks is not the same as being able to safely perform a trick. Even doing a simple hop is harder than you think. Start out slow and steady, then start doing longer distances. Then learn how to start-off fast and stop yourself without falling. When you're confident to skate steadily for a distance and can maneuver around pedestrians without falling, then you can start thinking about doing tricks.
Ok, decide how you want to be standing on your board. Depending on the situation, skaters can adopt different stances for the best use. The best way to figure out your stance is to simply get on your skateboard and stand still. Look for your most comfortable standing position, one that you can maintain with comfort. Now all you need is to determine how you'll be pushing off to get some speed. Without trying to go fast or far, practice pushing off with one foot. There are different types of pushing off, but for now find a way that feels comfortable and that won't send you sprawling.
This doesn't need to be hard, but it will take some time to get some proficiency with. Be patient and don't worry--you will learn! It is important that you take your time to really learn the skateboarding basics before you try to do anything fancy. Going too far and too fast is the way to get unnecessarily hurt. Keep skating and just maybe you'll be the next Tony Hawk.
