Roger Goodell is a commonly mentioned person in the NFL

. As the league's commissioner, he is a key figure in many decisions, but lately that task has held even more weight. In previous seasons, Goodell's main role appeared to be deciding what will happen to the miscreant players in the league. Hopefully, those times were good practice in decision making and conflict dispute, because his job in the next couple of seasons looks a whole lot tougher.

As it stands, 2010 is the last season for the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA), because it expires in March 2011. The negotiations between the NFL Players Association and the owners have been tense to put it lightly. Many decisions need to come before a new CBA is put in place, perhaps the most poignant of which is about money.

More specifically, who gets what and how much. The lucrative television contracts are a part of the negotiations. This tense standoff has been manifesting in many of this offseason's contracts. Multi-year contracts have been replaced by many one-year deals, as franchises wait to see the outcome of the CBA talks. In a worst-case-scenario situation, a lack of a new CBA could mean players get locked out for the 2011season. Some analysts have suggested that even if a new CBA is adopted, it wouldn't take effect until 2012, making 2011 an uncapped season.

Recently, one of the hot topics surrounding the new CBA is an expanded regular season. The way it is proposed would take away two preseason games and add two regular season games. Instead of four preseason games and 16 regular season games, the season would feature two preseason games and 18 regular season games.

Goodell spoke to the Associated Press about the proposition, saying that fans and players both want fewer preseason games. One of the concerns surrounding an expanded season is an increase of injuries, and Goodell also admitted more regular season games would have to mean changes to offseason workouts and other aspects of training. No matter what the decision, the 2010 season is sure to be exciting, and fans can find NFL tickets online.

Fans who want to quiz Goodell could have the chance before the start of the season. Goodell has already booked a trip to be at the Green Bay Packers' annual meeting of shareholders on July 29. He will be joined by John Madden. According to NFL.com, this stop is just one of many planned for Goodell and Madden, and they are finalizing a schedule to visit other training camps. An NFL spokesperson revealed that Goodell would be talking to fans during these visits.

While working on a new CBA, Goodell is also dealing with players breaking the league's conduct rules. One is Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young, who was given a misdemeanor assault citation in Dallas because of a fight at a nightspot. Young has already apologized for the incident, but Goodell hasn't yet ruled on whether he will receive a punishment from the league. Also on Goodell's radar is Seattle Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill, who was arrested for domestic violence in April. Goodell met with Hill, but has yet to make a decision regarding disciplinary action.
