Nfl Tickets - Predicting The Afc In 2010
It's never too early to start making predictions for how the 2010 NFL season might turn out
. Here's a breakdown of the divisions and teams that are in good shape to compete for a playoff position in the AFC.
AFC East: New England Patriots.
I know, the Jets are supposed to win the division. They have a great defense, a phenomenal offensive line and a coach who swears enough to make a marine drill instructor blush. Considering they went all the way to the AFC Championship game last year and added key pieces in the offseason, the Jets are the sexy pick to go to the Super Bowl. The problem is that the Patriots have Tom Brady and the Jets have Mark Sanchez. While the Patriots may not be able to stop anybody, their offense could be good enough to not have to, and Sanchez is under a lot of pressure as a second year signal caller. The Dolphins are also ready to make some noise, but the Patriots have the best quarterback/head coach combo in the division.
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens.
As long as the depleted Ravens secondary doesn't completely come back to bite them, and it might, the Ravens are in a great position to win the division. The Steelers didn't make the playoffs last year and now they have to go through a chunk of the season without franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. I like what the Bengals did by revamping their passing game in the offseason but I'm not sold on them as back-to-back division winners. With Joe Flacco getting Anquan Boldin to throw the ball down field to and Ray Rice in the back field, the Ravens are very scary on offense and still have a solid defense. If Flacco takes another step in his development and the secondary proves to be adequate, this could be a Super Bowl team.
AFC West: San Diego Chargers.
This one is actually a bit easy. Getting rid of JaMarcus Russell was a great move for the Oakland Raiders but bringing Jason Campbell isn't quite enough to get them into the playoff conversation. The Chiefs are also headed in the right direction, it seems, but they also don't have the talent at quarterback and in skill positions to compete with the Chargers. Because two of the Chargers' best players (Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill) may be out for an extended period of time, the division may stay up for grabs deep into the season but the Chargers should be there when the dust settles.
AFC South: Indianapolis Colts.
I'm really tempted to pick the Houston Texans here but it's just hard to go against the most consistently dominant QB in the league, Peyton Manning. Nobody thought the Colts were going to be a special team last year and they went 14-2 with a group of unproven wideouts that Peyton whipped into shape. This could be the closest the division has been in a while but beating out the Colts is a lot to ask for the Texans. The Titans and Jaguars, while having some of the league's most explosive playmakers, don't seem to have the quarterback play needed to get it done in this division.
Wildcards: New York Jets and Houston Texans.
Even though I'm not sure whether Sanchez can lead his team over the Patriots in the regular season, the Jets still a lot of talent at key positions. The only problem for the Jets is that they will have to battle it out with the Dolphins and the Patriots, leaving the real possibility that only the division winner will get into the playoffs.
The Texans, on the other hand, are an exciting team on the rise. Matt Schaub is probably the best quarterback that doesn't get a lot of ink and Andre Johnson makes their passing attack truly elite. If Arian Foster can give them a viable option in the backfield, this team could not only get to the playoffs but make some noise once they get there. With their high-flying attack, they also will certainly sell plenty of NFL tickets. Just missing out on the playoffs look to be the Bengals, Dolphins and Steelers.
AFC Champions: New England Patriots
This is one of the most intriguing years in the AFC. The favorite should be the Colts for obvious reasons but there are a couple of teams on the rise that will also make it interesting. If the Ravens didn't have gaping holes in the secondary heading into the season, they would probably be my pick to represent the AFC. However, with the lethal downfield passing attacks of the Chargers, Colts and Patriots, the Ravens could be in rough shape trying to keep up in the playoffs.
The team that people are somewhat forgetting about amidst the New York Jets hoopla is the New England Patriots. Though not as complete a team as the Colts, particularly on defense, the Patriots look to be shaping themselves back into 2007 form - the year that they broke nearly every major offensive record. With Tom Brady back and healthy and Randy Moss ready to go for broke in a contract year, the Pats are going to be a fun team to watch.
