Nfl Tickets - Randy Moss Or Andre Johnson?
In just about every fantasy football league around the country
, Andre Johnson was the consensus number one wide receiver available, though some have begun to take a closer look at Randy Moss' season heading into Week 1. Here's a breakdown of the top two fantasy receivers for 2010.
Andre Johnson, Houston Texans:
It's hard to argue that Andre Johnson would be a bad pick as the number one wideout chosen, which he certainly was in most fantasy drafts. Considering that Johnson has averaged 1,572 yards, 108 catches and 8.5 touchdowns the last two seasons, it's easy to understand why. At 6'3" and with unbelievable strength and athleticism, Johnson is an absolute nightmare matchup for any cover corner in the league. Yes, that even includes Darrelle Revis.
The other major advantage of Johnson is that he's in a good situation with an underrated gunslinger. While many fans will look predominately at how good a player is, the NFL has a way of wearing out players who get drafted into the wrong situation. Larry Fitzgerald is likely as talented as any receiver in the league but, without a quarterback, he's no match for Johnson, who plays in a pass-first offense with a bona fide starting quarterback, Matt Schaub, tossing him the ball.
Johnson also has the advantage of being far and away the best receiver on his team, which will ensure that he gets plenty of targets from week to week. Though this also means there is more attention being paid to him, Johnson has proven that he's capable of consistently beating double-teams. Johnson has yet to score double-digit touchdowns but this could definitely be the year he breaks through, as long as Schaub is able to remain healthy.
Randy Moss, New England Patriots:
If you're wondering whether or not Moss can still produce at the age of 33, don't. Moss remains as durable as any player in the league and last year posted more than 1,200 receiving yards for the eighth time in his career. With a per catch average of 15.2 yards, Moss remains the number one deep threat on an offense that throws the ball down the field as well as any team in the league and is still capable of making the big play that will help sell NFL tickets.
More importantly for this season, however, is that Moss is in a contract year. While there are some grumblings between Moss and management, there is no doubt that Moss will have something to prove this season if he wants to get a new contract next year. Moss' hands remain as good as any other receiver's in the league and his speed is still good enough to burn corners and safeties.
But what could separate Moss this year is that he's in an even better situation than Johnson. The Texans are certainly going to throw the ball over the field but they will at least attempt to find a bit of balance this year; with a better defense than New England, Houston should be looking to stress ball control and balance much more than New England will this season. In New England, the Patriots have considerable question marks on defense, which will only emphasize the need to light up the scoreboard. Considering that the Pats have not been able to run the ball over the last couple of seasons, this will mean throwing the ball down the field to Moss and underneath the Wes Welker.
The other advantage Moss has is that he is the prime target of one of the truly premier quarterbacks in the league. In the two seasons that Moss has played with Tom Brady, Moss has averaged 18 touchdowns per season, including a 2007 year in which he set the single-season touchdown record with 23. Though Johnson has never had 10 touchdowns in a season, Moss has hit the mark nine times in his career and 13 or more six times. Moss is still a touchdown machine and Welker's questionable health will mean the Pats will lean even heavier on Moss, particularly if they fail to develop a running game. Johnson should still have a tremendous season but the upside for Moss this year is simply off the charts.
