Nfl Tickets - The Great Quarterback Discard And Pickup
The teams around the NFL finished their preseason and instantly turned their attention to trimming down their rosters to the 53-man limit
. Fans are already snatching up NFL tickets for the regular season games, and the weather is starting to turn, indicating it is time for gridiron action. For the final cut, teams are cutting players that may be perfectly suited for another team, and they are often picked up by other teams within hours. This can start a chain of pickups and discards that effects many teams. It happened this season in the quarterback department, affecting four teams.
It started with the Chicago Bears (fitting, since they helped start the NFL). The Bears have Jay Cutler as their starting back and Caleb Hanie as a backup. The Bears picked up Dan LeFevour from Central Michigan in the 2010 NFL Draft to be the third-string quarterback. His performance became even more important when Hanie suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder during the preseason.
The Bears apparently weren't comfortable with the possibility of LeFevour becoming the starter should anything happen to Cutler, so they added veteran quarterback Todd Collins. Collins has been in the league since 1995. Last season, he played for the Washington Redskins in three games, tallying 144 yards and a passer rating of 71.6. When the final cuts were upon them, the Bears decided to part ways with LeFevour. In his best game during the preseason-during week three against the Arizona Cardinals-LeFevour was 10 of 12 for 100 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and a passer rating of 129.2.
His effort impressed the Cincinnati Bengals, who claimed him off of waivers. He won't be moving up in position to join the team, because he is behind starting quarterback Carson Palmer and his younger brother Jordan Palmer. Carson Palmer hasn't been injury free during his many seasons with the Bengals, meaning that the Bengals' backups may get a chance at the field this season. To make room, the Bengals released J.T. O'Sullivan. Last season, O'Sullivan played three games for the Bengals, amassing 40 yards and a passer rating of 47.5. O'Sullivan has also been with the San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints since he entered the league in 2002.
O'Sullivan wasn't without a team for long and was promptly picked up by the San Diego Chargers. He landed at third on their depth chart, behind starter Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek. Rivers has been relatively healthy during the past several seasons. Last year, he started in every regular season game and had 4,254 yards, 28 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a passer rating of 104.4. Volek has been in the league since 2000, starting as a backup with the Tennessee Titans.
Last season, Volek played in four games and had 231 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a rating of 84.2. To make room for O'Sullivan, the Bolts released rookie quarterback Jonathan Crompton, the team's fifth-round draft pick from 2010. Crompton signed to the Chargers practice squad.
