Nfl Tickets - Things To Take Away From Week One In The Afc
The one thing NFL fans need to do is avoid knee-jerk reactions
, which can be tough to do in the midst of the enthusiasm for the start of a new season. But even though it's wise to use caution when extrapolating for the long term based on week one in the NFL, the opening weekend still showed a few trends that will definitely come in to play as we move deeper into the season.
The Patriots are going to be explosive:
This isn't to say that the Pats are going to win the Super Bowl again this year or dominate the competition as they did in 2007. After all, that year they scored 315 more points than their opponents, which is nothing short of absurd. The Pats will never get back to that level, but they did show the some signs of dominance in their opening weekend win against the Bengals. Though the Bengals punched home a couple late-game scores, the Pats moved the ball efficiently and scored at ease when they had their foot on the gas in the early parts of the game.
The main reason for this, of course, is the revival of Wes Welker, who was a big question mark heading into the season after shredding his knee late last season. Welker was once again the possession receiver Tom Brady needs him to be, grabbing eight catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns. With his full arsenal running at full speed, Brady had the most impressive quarterbacking day of Week One, throwing for 258 yards - mostly in the early going - and three touchdowns while not throwing any picks. Considering the Bengals won the AFC North last season and have one of the stronger defenses in the league, it seems that the Pats have what it takes to move the ball and challenge the top teams in the conference.
The Texans are for real:
It's just one game, but it was a big one. With the dominant Colts coming into Houston as the reigning champs, the Texans had a lot to prove. One of the criticisms surrounding the Texans was that they couldn't run the football and that they would eventually struggle to throw the ball if they became one-dimensional. Unfortunately for the rest of the conference, the Texans seem to have found their running game with Arian Foster in the backfield. The little known back burst onto the scene in week one, running for 231 yards and three touchdowns, helping to control the line of scrimmage and comfortably beat the Colts.
More than anything, the strong running game was a statement to the rest of the league. We all know quarterback Matt Schaub can throw the ball, but now it seems that defenses will have to worry about a running back that can take over the game as well. With more balance, Schaub should be able to stay healthy and the passing game as a whole will benefit, even if some of the aerial statistics decrease. The Texans still may not have enough to win the division, but it looks like they'll be in the running.
The Titans are better than anticipated:
I know -- they played the Raiders, who are still not necessarily in the upper echelon of NFL teams. At home, the Titans were supposed to win the game to open the season, but not many could have anticipated that they were going to blow out the Raiders 38-13. The Titans are actually one of the more exciting teams in the league thanks to Chris Johnson, who helps sell plenty of NFL tickets. Not only does Chris Johnson know how to run, but Vince Young continues to excel at scrambling once the pocket breaks down.
But what was impressive was the way that Young was able to throw the ball down the field. Young has always been criticized for his lack of throwing ability, though he's starting to turn some heads. Though he's not going to throw for 4,000 yards any time soon, all the Titans need Young to do is take care of the football and make the occasional throw once the running game opens up the passing game. Against the Raiders, Young did more than that, going 13-of-17 for 154 yards and two touchdowns. More importantly, he didn't turn the ball over and was sacked just two times. I'm not sold on their wideouts but the Titans are an interesting team to watch as the season goes on. We'll know a lot more after they host the Steelers next weekend.
