Nice, la Belle Ville (Nice, the Beautiful City)
Nice, la Belle Ville (Nice, the Beautiful City)
Where in France will you find a place with a mild climate, a scenic port, delicious food, beautiful pastel-colored buildings and everything else that's nice? In Nice of course! Pronounced as "nees," this city in southern France is a major tourist center and a leading resort city on the French Riviera. Listed below are some of its marvels.
Promenade des Anglais. One of the most popular tourist spots in the city is the Promenade des Anglais or "the Walkway of the English." Back in the 1800s, Nice was just a little-known place bordered by a deserted band of beach covered by large pebbles. During the second half of that century, the English became tired of the harsh winter up north and took to spending the frosty months along Nice's scenic natural coastline, arriving by the thousands each year. Hence, when a coastal walkway was constructed, it was named after the English as a tribute to them. Whoever said the French and the English can never agree on anything?
Hotel Negresco. This palatial hotel, which is among the most luxurious in the world, is located along the Promenade des Anglais. The hotel was named after its founder, Henri Negresco, who in 1912 had the idea of building a splendid vacation spot that will attract the wealthiest people from Europe and America. While the hotel had its ups and downs throughout the decades (at one point even becoming a hospital), it now stands as one of France's National Historic Buildings. With its exquisite and beautiful menu and it's doormen who are dressed in a livery akin to those worn by those who worked in 18th century elite bourgeois households, you're certain to go click-happy with your camera in Hotel Negresco.
Cathdrale Orthodoxe Russe Saint-Nicolas de Nice. The Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Nice is a national monument of France. Constructed in 1859, it is said to be the oldest Russian cathedral in Western Europe. Now, it has even sparked an ownership row between the parish personnel and the Russian Government. Whatever, right? The architecture may look like it was plucked right out of Moscow but its character is definitely French to the core.
Ratatouille.Made popular by the animated film about a cooking rat, Ratatouille is actually a well-known French Provenal stewed vegetable dish invented in Nice, hence its complete name, ratatouille nioise. It actually bears a resemblance to pinakbet, the fabled dish from Ilocos, my Philippine province, because of the similarity in ingredients used. Except of course for the fact that ratatouille is served with bread (pinakbet lovers dare try this?) and is not swimming in stew. Its main ingredientstomatoes, garlic, onions, zucchini, aubergine, and poivron are sauted lightly in olive oil for one fantastic burst of flavors.
Cours Selaya. If you love nature's blooms, then the famous Cours Selaya Flower Market is definitely for you. The market is flanked with quaint-looking cafs and souvenir shops and serves host to a great number of booths that display a myriad of produce and flowers. It is open six days a week and is transformed to a flea market and antique bazaar on Mondays.
Le Chataeu. Why should you visit Le Chataeu? Because there, you will be treated to a spectacular panoramic view of Nice and of the Mediterranean Sea. You will not actually see much of the castle because only a few parts of it remain but the park atop the hill will afford you the most charming picture of the city you'll have. You can either take the elevator up the hill for a small price or just hike up and get some exercise at the same time.
Thtre de la Photographie et de l'Image. Some blocks away from the busy Boulevard Jean Medicine is a lovely old building that is a tribute to the photographic arts. Entry is free and its exhibits are universal in appeal. For example, it has shown portraits of Hollywood stars from past to present, as well as an exhibit on American Indians. And they said the French frowned on anything American!
While in Nice, don't forget to visit all other hotspots that are also photo-worthy the Lympia port where the city's mean yachts and boats are anchored, the many old squares like Place Massna, Place Garibaldi and Place du Palais, and for the geek in every one of us, there's also the Observatoire de Nice, where you can find one of the world's largest telescopes.
