Niche vs Sub Niche

When it comes to a niche and a sub-niche, there is one difference between the two.

Many marketers, especially newbie marketers, or those who are new to niche marketing, are not clear about the differences between the two (there is, in fact, a difference between the two). Some of them even think that both niche and sub-niches are the same (however, the fact is that they are not).

What I am going to do in this post (a short one today) is to share with you what a niche, as well as a sub-niche, is, in layman terms - So that it is easier for you to be able to understand, and be able to differentiate the difference between the two.

When I talk about a niche - I am referring to subjects such as dog training, fly fishing, golf, dating, fitness, etc. These are, what I call, broad niches. Meaning they are still very generalized.

The reason why I am saying that the niches that I have just listed above are still very generalized is because under each of them, there is a whole spectrum of what is called sub-niches (which are niches within a particular niche).

Take for example, for dog training, there are lots of different types dog trainings - Such as potty training, house training, obedience training, etc. And these are all sub-niches of the dog training niche.

Let me give you another example - Under the broad niche "golf", there is a whole spectrum of sub-niche such as golf for beginners, tips on perfecting golf swing, golfing accessories, etc.

Now, let me show you the number of competing websites as we drill down from a general niche to the sub-niches:

The general niche "Dog Training" has a total of 6,850,000 competing websites.

Let us now go into the sub-niches of "Dog Training", as well as the number of competing websites (in brackets):

"Dog Potty Training" (34,000), "Dog House Training" (42,000), "Dog Obedience Training" (373,000)

As you can see, the number of competing websites becomes smaller and smaller as you drill down a niche into the sub-niches. In order words, the more specific the niche becomes, the number of competing websites decreases as well. And this also mean that it is easier for your website to be ranked well in the search engines (for these sub-niches) as there is a much lower number of competing websites.

Unless you have excellent Search Engine Optimization skills, if you are just starting off with Internet Marketing, my suggestion is that you start off with creating a website to provide information on a particular sub-niche that you have an affinity with. It will be much easier for you to be able to get your website ranked well in the search engines in these sub-niches instead of in the broad niche.

I hope that, with this post, it will help you gain a much better understanding of the differences between a niche, as well as a sub-niche.
