Cover Band to Mega Rock Band

Originally formed in Hanna, Alberta, Canada, Nickelback started as the Village Idiots in the 1990s and was a cover band doing songs by Metallica and Led Zeppelin. In 1995, the band was finally formed as a true rock band that included members Mike, Brandon, and Chad Kroeger, and Ryan Peake. After deciding to stray from cover songs, Nickelback was formed, named after a line Mike would say to customers at Starbucks, "Here's your nickel back." By 1996, with funding from Chad's father, the band released their first EP called Hesher. That same year, Curb, their first full album, was also recorded. Brandon left the band in 1997 and was replaced by Ryan Vikedal who was the drummer until 1995.

The band sent their music to as many producers as possible and they finally got interest Ron Burman of Roadrunner A&R who immediately liked their music. By 1999, Nickelback had signed with Roadrunner Records and EMI. In 2000, The State was released and almost instantly Nickelback was a successful band with two Top Ten hits, "Breathe" and "Leader of Men". That was just the beginning for Nickelback who would become commercially successful with the release of their third album Silver Side Up. One of the band's biggest hits, "How You Remind Me", was on that album and made the band one of the biggest rock bands to come out of Canada since Green Day.

Nickelback didn't stop there, though, and continued to release more albums that each had top charting songs including the albums The Long Road and All the Right Reasons. In order to ensure that their albums not only sold well, but more importantly that fans truly enjoyed and appreciated their music, Nickelback always takes breaks in between albums in order to take time to study music, trends, and write powerful lyrics. Since the recording of their first album in 1996, Nickelback has recorded and released six other albums with Here and Now being the latest in a long line of smash albums. The band is currently on tour to support the album and has been rocking stages all across the world.
