When the greatness will be realized is simply a question of time. For once, it is clear that the most populous nation of people in Africa is slowly and steadily on the march towards unprecedented prosperity and glory that will guarantee liberty, freedom and opportunity to majority of the citizenry.While all nations experience undesirable episodes, Nigeria has had its own fair share of trying moments. Aside from the avoidable man-made calamities that rear its head from time to time, the geographical location called Nigeria has not been recorded in recent times to suffer from natural disasters. This is one outstanding favor that the Creator of the Universe has bestowed on the country and the people.Societal evolution in different parts of the globe has shown that once a people or a nation recognize the fact that they have a collective destiny, it becomes easier for them to collaborate and work in a way and manner that promotes mutual respect and benefit. The democratic experience so far in Nigeria has brought this issue of mutual interdependence to the fore and it appears that the traditional walls that keep people apart are being slowly broken down day by day.It is no longer surprising to find young Nigerians who have lived in virtually all parts of the country, who are able to communicate effectively in many languages and at the same time able to maintain a solid network of friends and associates from diverse backgrounds. From the sort of issues that are discussed these days in the public and private arena, it is clear that majority are slowly realizing the futility of exhibiting divisive tendencies.Rather than hanging on the sidelines and apportioning blames for failures, there is an increasing awareness among young people across the country that in order to affect positive change, active participation is required in the social, economic, political and cultural life of the country. This participation may be at any level of governance so that through a gradual and determined process of civilized advocacy, superior arguments, positions and policy may emerge to facilitate good governance. There is no gainsaying the fact that the next stage of Nigeria's democratic experiment will certainly throw up a better quality of leadership.It is gladdening to note that there is a general consensus that the system must have a credible system of leadership succession at all levels of governance, whether in the public or private sectors of the economy. There is renewed focus on ethics, established systems and respect for the rule of law. All the above are symptoms of a politically-maturing society. I believe that very soon in Nigeria, it will no longer matter what your name is or where you even come from. Rather, people will be assessed based on the content and quality of their character.The clock is ticking. The world is watching. The stage is set. The athletes are set to bolt. The march has begun.
