Nigerians Celebrate Their Festivals With Great Passion


Nigeria has huge ethnic divisions in its population. Each ethnic group of Nigeria has its own culture. On base of culture, each ethnic group celebrates its own festivals in Nigeria. Nigerians from other countries of world also come to their land for participating in these festivals. They take Flights to Lagos for celebrating some cultural festivals of their country.

Argungu Fishing Festival

It is a colourful festival which takes place in Kebbi State. This festival takes place on annual basis. Arugungu is a town where this festival is celebrated. This town is located at 64 miles distance from Sokoto; Sokoto is the leading attraction for tourists in this area. The first organization of this festival took place in 1934; Sultan Dan Mu'azu had come to this place on a historic visit at that time. A fishing festival was organized at the grand level to honour the king. Since the first time this festival is celebrated in same area in same data in each year. In this festival, many boys and men of local areas catch fish with fishnets. The beautiful music of drummers continues when they catch fish. This music brings passion in their efforts. The crowd of boys and men enter into waters; they bring the fish to shallow waters. As a result to their efforts, vast quantities of fish are harvested through fishnets. A canoe racing event, a duck hunting contest, a bare handed fishing contest and a contest of swimming are the other important parts of this festival. The whole day is spent in contest and when night comes, people drink, dance and sing. Those fishermen who succeed in catching leading weights of fish, they are awarded prizes for their achievements.


Eyo Festival

Brazil is popular in world due to its carnivals. Historians expect that the tradition of carnivals came to Brazil from Nigeria. It is so because during slave trade, many Nigerians were brought to Brazil. At present, Nigeria has a festival which is similar to Brazilian festival. Historians believe that Eyo Festival of Lagos is the mother of Brazilian Carnivals. At this day, the main highway of Lagos, which connects different parts of Lagos to the heart of city, is closed. This area is filled with processions of Idunganran, Iga and Idumota. The participants of these processions pay tribute to the Oba of Lagos. Eyo Festival is arranged according to traditions and occasions. Normal dates of this festival are kept at the times when memories of a highly regarded chief of past are remembered.
