Nikon P7000 Camera Review

The Nikon P7000 has an optical viewfinder and a non-interchangeable 7.1x (28-200mm

equivalent) zoom lens that retracts to make a fairly flat design that's easy to stuff in a jacket pocket or purse, but a little large for a pair of slacks. With a 10.1-megapixel sensor thats a larger-than-average 1/1.7-inch size, theres plenty of scope for top-notch quality - larger sensor size means bigger pixel sites compared to a smaller equivalent, thus more light is available to each which leads to a better signal and, so the theory goes, a cleaner image.

Overall, the Nikon P7000 has an inconspicuous design that's great for getting candids on the sly. Weighing 12.6 ounces with card and battery, the Nikon Coolpix P7000 seemed a little lighter and slimmer than the Canon G11, but only a touch. The Nikon P7000's build still feels solid, with its mostly metal body.

The P7000 has a couple of innovative optical features. It's equipped with a built-in neutral density (ND) filter, the first Coolpix model to offer this feature, which provides a three-stop decrease in the shutter speed, enabling you to use a slower shutter speed in bright surroundings and achieve exactly the creative effect that you want.

The front view reveals a small rubber grip, with an infrared port right next to the right microphone hole. Above that is the AF-assist lamp. A small function button appears to the lower left of the lens, and to the right of that is the accessory lens release button. As it sits almost flush yet protrudes ever so slightly across the back its rather easy to knock it out of position, especially as fingers need to reach around it in order to press the shutter.

A metal ring surrounds the lens, which is removed before attaching a converter lens adapter. Bottom left of the lens is the new Fn button, just one of the ways in which the P7000 can be customised to suit your shooting style. Although having an optical type is preferable for clarity, a model like the P7000 would potentially benefit more from an electronic viewfinder to allow for a greater field of view and also the ability to play back images direct to eye.

Quality, ISO, White Balance, Bracketing (including exposure, ISO sensitivity, and white balance), My Menu (which effectively allows you to register your favourite menu options and then quickly access them) and Intelligent Exposure.
