Nine Steps To Getting Your Website Noticed
To put it another way, is it doing it's job in terms of driving customers to look
at and buy your goods and services? Does it appear at or near the top of the search results?
It doesn't matter how great your site looks, it's wasted if people are not finding it. As most people know, you can pay to boost your search rankings - Google Ads is one option that will boost your ranking, at a price. However there are some free tricks and tools that you, or a SEO firm, can use to boost your ranking.
1. Search egnines don't just find your site by accident - the need to know you exist. At the very least, add your URL to the big three search engines: Google, Yahoo and Bing (previously Live.com).
Key links:
http://www.google.co.uk/addurl
http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
http://www.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx
2. Also submit your website to www.dmoz.org - the independent, non-profit Web-monitoring project that Google pull results from for their directory. When you add your site to Dmoz it will be validated by a real human being. The draw-back is that review process is lengthy, so it may be a few weeks or months before you reap the results.
3. Add a sitemap to your website. It's an often overlooked file that shows search engines where to find and index all of your web pages. Several services including www.xml-sitemaps.com will generate one for you and there are XML sitemap generating plugins for many of the major blogging and content management systems.
4. Content is king when it comes to making your web site visible to users. Remember to put yourself in the mind of potential clients. Let's say you are a womens hairdressers in Leicester, what would potential customers type into a search engine? They might be looking for someone local to them, for a particular hairstyle, or a particular hair treatment. Now look at all the text in your web site. Have you got all those keyphrases covered?
5. Keywords are embedded in meta tags within the code of your web site, and they must include any terms that your customers would search for. It's worth spending time getting them right. Google's search based keyword tool may help you with suggestions at www.google.com/sktool/ but funnily enough Google place very little importance, if any, on the keyword meta tag - but other search engines do however.
6. Photos improve the attractiveness of your web site and can also help search engines if you name the files in the right way. Rather than 001.jpg naming the file nottingham_hairdresser.jpg would help to add additional keyword content to your pages but make sure that the file name accurately describes the content of the photo otherwise it could be detected as keyword spam.
7. Incoming links from other websites can really boost your search rankings so it's well worth getting involved in relevent forums and discussion groups where you can link back to your site. Beware of two way link swaps with other sites for SEO purposes as search engines can detect that tactic and will often disregard it.
8. Your META description tag doesn't appear on your page but provides vital information for search engines. It's your chance to briefly describe what the page is all about. Many search engines use this info to describe your site in the search results so use it to encourage people to click the link. Keep it short and sweet and bear in mind that every page of your site should have its own uniquely written description tag.
9. The most visible tag on the page is the Title attribute. Anything you enter here appears in the title bar of the web browser and also the title of the search results. Make sure your title attributes are relevent and include your site's keywords.
Armed with this information you are now in a position to implement these basic SEO techniques for yourself but if you need any help I recommend you hire an experienced search engine optimisation firm. There are no guarantees that these tips will increase your business but they will undoubtably improve your search ranking and put it infront of more potential customer's eye balls.
