Let's get one thing straight.
Booklet printing is simple and you can create one that is functional and very effective quite easily. You don't have to avail of those special booklet printing deals that printers offer. You don't need those special frills and coatings if you don't have the money. If all you need is simple no nonsense functional booklet printing, there are only four things you need to focus on.
Keep things bound good together A mark of a good, and functional booklet is a good binding. You can sacrifice a lot to get cheap booklet printing, but the binding is something that should be at least good for a booklet to be functional. You want your booklets to last as long as you can make them right? Binding is key to extending the life of a booklet since it keeps all those pages together.
So, if you want a really functional and good booklet, I recommend binding your booklets in the best possible way you can, and that is perfect binding. With lots of high strength adhesives and overlapping paper binds your booklets should last quite good. Don't waste your time with those flashy ring binds or comb binds, perfect binding is perfect enough.
Booklets prepared for the environment Another mark of a good booklet is paper toughness, The booklets must have thick and strong paper so that it can survive exposure to dirt, moisture and physical attacks such as folding and tearing without getting significant damage. To do this, it is best to print booklets with high quality paper that is thick and water resistant. Ask your booklet printer if they have any of these paper stocks available. Moreover, you may want to thicken the cover paper even further to a cardboard like thickness so that the inside pages are more protected. In this way, the booklets should be able to survive quite well to most common wear and tear scenarios for booklets.
Good printing inks and processes A functional booklet should also have the best printing process with the best ink. The inks should not be runny when water comes into contact with it, and the printing process should quickly dry to avoid any smudging or deterioration. That is why I recommend using dry laser jet printers or hiring professional booklet printing companies with offset printers to make sure the printing quality is sound.
Any kind of color Finally, a simple and functional booklet should have any kind of color you need. If you are printing something that is mostly just text and a few simple symbols, you should just stick to black and white booklet printing. However, if you plan to print booklets with lots colored images, then of course you must use full color. So it really depends on the colored images. If you just use 2-4 images or symbols, I recommend just printing in black and white. Gray scale is not so bad if there are not too many images to begin with. If it is more than that, it might be best to take full advantage of the images and go full color booklet printing with your design. It should be worth it.
So there you have it a few tips for no nonsense, simple and functional booklet printing. You don't have to overdo do it unless you want to.
