No Victory, but Positives Still for Woods

Tiger Woods did not end up contending for his first tournament victory of the year

at the Barclays on Sunday, but he at least made a case that his stellar first round was not just blind luck.

Woods turned in a round of four-under 67 to finish at seven under, which at the end of his round left him five strokes behind the leader, Martin Laird, and tied for eighth place. That would represent Woods's best finish since he tied for fourth place at the United States Open more than two months ago.

For Woods, the Barclays was an up-and-down tournament, to say the least. For the first 27 holes, he looked like his old self, playing what he described as his best round of the year in the tournament's first round (a six-under 65) to command a share of the lead, and he continued to play well midway through the second round.

Then he crumbled, bogeying four of his final eight holes. The third round only continued his slide; he began on No. 1 with his first triple-bogey since 2007 and added another bogey on No. 9 to drop him to even par over all, suddenly putting him at risk of not advancing in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

But Woods recovered on the back nine, notching three birdies, and he was solid on Sunday, too, with another five birdies. His only misstep came on the par-three No. 10, which he bogeyed after his tee shot landed in the rough and he missed a 20-foot putt for par.

Woods did not have any doubts about the cause of his inconsistency.

"I putted good the first day and I putted good today," Woods said. "The middle two rounds I didn't. Consequently, I shot myself out of it."

Woods said he felt he hit the ball well enough all weekend that if he had not been betrayed by his putter for that two-round span, he would have been "right there" among the leaders heading into the back nine on Sunday. "This is a week that I was very close," Woods said.

Woods was ranked 112th in the FedEx Cup standings when he came into the Barclays, which serves as the first of the four rounds that make up the FedEx Cup playoffs. But his finish will move him much higher in the standings based on the leader board when Woods finished his round, he was projected to move up to 60th place meaning he will be among the 100 players who advance to next weekend's Deutsche Bank Championship.
