Nokias Touchscreen Affordability In The Nokia 5250

Housed in a body derived from its sharp cornered X3/X6 styling

, the new Nokia 5250 is the Finnish mobile phone leaders answer to the burgeoning entry level touchscreen smartphones littering the now highly competitive smartphone landscape.

Looking at its lineup of dark grey, blue, red, purple and white body color options, you know right away the 5250 is pitched to the younger trendier markets with a preference for touchscreen smartphones.

It has no 3G, no GPS and no capacitive multitouch screen so its a giveaway for an entry level handset. Turn it on and youll get the old familiar S60 release 5.0 UI on the Symbian OS which betrays that this is another capable Nokia smartphone with nothing outstanding or new to offer.

The Nokia 5250 follows a naming convention that Nokia earlier announced would be supplanted by its alphanumeric designation. It is clearly a continuation of the 5000 series of its XpressMusic and Comes With Music line. Whether this reveals some internal strife within Nokia headquarters or not, its a welcome naming that brings back the good old days.

Feature Set Up Close

Measuring 104 x 49 x 14mm and weighing a relatively light 104g, the Nokia 5250 is just your basic quad band GSM phone with class 32 GPRS/EDGE data connectivity. It has no WiFi but local high speed data transfers and synching are supported by its Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP and microUSB v2.0 for wireless and wired options, respectively.

Like most other budget entry level touchscreens in the market, you get 2.8 inches of screen real estate with its resistive touchscreen technology on a 640 x 360 resolution and 16 million colors. Neither a proximity or accelerometer sensor is provided but that should bring the price a lot more affordable than if they were.

Imaging is also not something you can expect from even an entry level Samsung touchscreen. But its 2 megapixel fixed focus snapper with video recording at QVGA resolution and a smooth 30fps does the job well for preserving those rare moments on the fly. Theres nothing fancy about its features.

A Music Phone

Its standout features comes from its being a capable music phone. The Nokia 5250 has a stereo FM radio and the media players for MP3 and AAC+ audio files as well as MP4 and H265 video files. Stereo listening gets two options. You can have a wired listening from your favorite high fidelity headsets courtesy of its industry standard 3.5mm audio jack or you can go wireless with an A2DP compliant stereo Bluetooth earphones. You also get access to its Ovi Music Unlimited in some countries.

Internal memory is capped at a measly 51 MB but the important thing for your multimedia files is its microSD support for external memory expansion for up to 16 GB. Theres a standard li-ion battery that allows you to enjoy 24 hours of continuous music playback on the road from a single charge. It also powers the handset up to 7.6 hours of talk time and 450 hours on standby.
