Normal Anxiety Vs Problem Anxiety
Anxiety is not a new word for any of us, because we have all experienced phobias
, stress, fears and anxiety in our daily lives. Different people can feel stressful in different everyday situations such as exams, driving, hospital visits, shopping, socializing or taking flights. It is a normal human condition; we can define it as a diffused, unpleasant, vague sense of apprehension. In fact, anxiety is considered to be a beneficial response in certain dangerous situations.
Although anxiety gives us an uncomfortable feeling, some of the situations it rears up in are considered normal. We have all had experiences of anxiety provoking firsts' - our first date, our first day of school or our first time away from home. There are also many important life events throughout life which can cause anxiety, such as getting married, becoming a parent, getting divorced or changing jobs.
For an upcoming test, anxiety may allow you to work harder to prepare for the examination. When you walk through darkness, anxiety will cause you to be alert and cautions of the surroundings.
Some people consider that anxiety is always a problem, but it's easy to see why in some cases where increased adrenaline and heightened awareness are useful, anxiety is normal and even beneficial to us.
The source and intensity of the experience is the main yard-stick between "normal anxiety" and "problem anxiety".
Compared with normal anxiety which is temporary and expected in certain situations, problem anxiety has the tendency to be long term and irrational, and interferes with various basic life functions. Problem anxiety can make people have sudden and extremely intense symptoms, for instance palpitations, sweating, trembling or shaking, dizziness, fear of dying or a pounding heart.
These physical responses to anxiety and distorted thoughts are a source of excessive worry and behavioral changes in a sufferer that can detrimentally affect the way they live life and interact with other people. A sufferer can begin to drastically change their habits and lifestyle, to avoid the chance of getting into any situation which could cause them increased anxiety or to suffer a panic attack. Due to this, if problem anxiety is left unchecked it can develop into a serious anxiety disorder.
Only when the sufferer themselves have a good understanding of their own anxiety, can they find a way to avoid problem anxiety whilst benefitting from the normal anxiety everyone feels in their daily lives.
