North East crucial for India's development: Sonia Gandhi
SHILLONG: March 05, 2010. Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday began a two-day visit to North-East states, the first in the region as part of the yearlong nation wide celebrations to commemorate the 125th year of the Congress.
The two-day tour was kicked-off in Shillong on Friday where Congress President Sonia Gandhi inaugurated a super specialty hospital - North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) and also laid the foundation stone for Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, the headquarters for the Congress in the region.
Little later, at Polo Ground in Shillong while addressing a public rally, Congress President Sonia Gandhi urged the mass at large to actively associate for all round inclusive development of the entire region.
Talking about the NEIGRIHMS, she said that on the lines of National Rural Health Mission, the need was to have similar services for urban sectors, so as to cater to more people.
"You have given us a mandate and we are tirelessly working hard to fulfill aspirations of all, including the youth in the country," said Congress President Sonia Gandhi in her address to the public.
She told the gathering that youth in more and more numbers in the country are joining the Congress party and efforts are on to encourage them for active participation.
Commenting on politics, she said, "We don't believe in power for power. Ours is the only party which believes in sanctity and integrity in politics. We are dedicated to the people and we are working with a national vision for all round growth and development of one and all.
"With this mission, in the 125th year of the Congress, we re-dedicate our services to the nation," said Congress President Sonia Gandhi. North East has a vital role to play in overall development of the nation, she said adding, "But, without your support a united and developed nation could not be possible."
Talking about core sectors like agriculture and tourism in the region, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said that the need is for investment in these sectors.
"And, we are doing it," she stressed, adding that in the recent annual Budget a special allocation of Rs 3,900 crore has been made for Meghalaya. For electrification of villages in the region, more funds would be allocated, she assured, while acknowledging need of enhanced connectivity for bigger trade and commerce activities in the border states in the region.
Talking about Right To Information Act (RTI), Congress President Sonia Gandhi remarked that RTI was the achievement of the UPA regime and urged the public to use it more, as the same brings transparency in the governance at all levels.
Later in the afternoon, Congress President Sonia Gandhi inaugurated Don Bosco Museum, which showcases the north eastern culture and civilizations, depicting the indigenous characteristics of people of this region.
On the concluding day of the two-day visit on Saturday, Congress President Sonia Gandhi will visit Izol, where she would inaugurate Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex and would also address a public rally during the day.
