Osian:
This is an ancient town near Jodhpur famous for its 8th century Jain temples. In the past from 8th to 12th century, it has served as an important trading center. It is also an important Jain pilgrimage. Visit the beautiful Sun temple, Kali temple and the main Jain temple inside the temple complex. Fashioned out of red sandstone, these temples are exquisitely carved. The Sun temple is the oldest one among the three and has an arresting doorway. Another attraction of Osian is the camel safari on the sand dunes. You can even opt for a stay in a luxurious camel camp.
Pokharan:
This rustic town is famous for its red sand stone Fort Pokharan dating back to the 14th century. The term Pokharan means 'The Place of Five Mirages'. The town derived its name from the five salt ranges surrounding it. This town was once a trade center which used to export silk, salt and spices to Persia and other countries. For offering a royal experience to tourists, the fort has been converted into a heritage hotel. Visit the museum inside the fort complex where royal articles like armory, handicrafts, miniature paintings and costumes are on display. Beautiful birds like Damsel Cranes,Migratory Bird the Imperial Sand Grouse, The Great Indian Bustard and Houbara Bustard are spotted here. To sight the birds and animals you can go on a jeep safari in the dried salt ranges of Pokharan. Also take an excursion to the nearby places to see how carpets, blankets, shawls and terracotta items are made by the weavers and local artists.
Ranakpur:
It is a famous pilgrimage site for Jains. The Jain temples of Ranakpur are its main attractions. The five hundred year old Ranakpur temple draws tourists from far and wide. Among all the temples the Chaumukha temple(four-faced) deserves special mention. It was built in honor of the first Jain tirthankara, Adinathji. The breathtaking stone carvings of the temple leave the onlookers spell bound. There are 29 halls and 1,444 columns inside the temple and the interesting thing is that all the columns are different in their carvings. The assembly hall houses two huge bells, each with a weight of 108 kg. You can also go for shopping in Ranakpur s its bustling bazaars offer wonderful handicrafts such as paintings, wooden articles, leather ware, blue pottery, jewelery and precious gems.
