What is Rhinoplasty?

Coming from the Greek word "rhinos" that means "nose" and the word "Plassein" which means "to shape," rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is typically performed in order to improve the function or appearance of a person's nose. The surgical procedure can reduce or increase the size of a person's nose as well as to modify its shape. Rhinoplasty can change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to reshape the nose. Sometimes referred to as a "nose job," it can be performed to correct a structural deformity (such as a bump or hook), to improve your appearance by making subtle changes to your nose size and shape, or to correct a functional problem (difficulty breaking due to a deviated septum).

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

Your new nose will not be fully evident until after your rhinoplasty recovery period is over. Your recovery period will vary considerably from one person to another. How quickly you heal after surgery depends on many factors, including the extent of your nose surgery, your personal resilience factors, your surgeon's skill set and how closely you follow his or her pre-and postoperative instructions. Discuss your rhinoplasty recovery with your surgeon during your initial consultation. They will be able to give you a general idea of what to expect. If taking time off work or school is a consideration, or if others are dependent upon you, you will need to plan accordingly.

Is Rhinoplasty for You?

As with all facial plastic surgery, good health and realistic expectations are vital, in addition to understanding nasal surgery. The goal in rhinoplasty is to improve the nose aesthetically, making it harmonize better with other facial features. Skin type, ethnic background and age are important factors to be considered in discussions with your surgeon prior to surgery. Before the nose is altered, a young patient must reach full growth, usually around age fifteen or sixteen. Exceptions are cases in which breathing is severely impaired.

Before deciding on rhinoplasty, ask your facial plastic surgeon if any additional surgery might be recommended to enhance the appearance of your face. Rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.
