The name "Park Lane" will sound familiar to any board game enthusiast as the most expensive property after "Mayfair" in the popular game of Monopoly. In reality Park Lane is a multilane road on Mayfair's western boundary with Hyde Park. Despite being home to a series of glamorous hotels, restaurants, and car showrooms, Park Lane has relatively humble historical origins. As a simple country road it gradually became popular as a chic residential area during the 1800s due to its proximity to the scenic Hyde Park. It rose to prominence in the 1930s with the demolition and subsequent construction of luxury hotels on the site of former privately-owned mansions such as the Grosvenor House and the Dorchester House. The resulting buildings became what are now known as the Grosvenor House Hotel and The Dorchester, the most famous of the Park Lane hotels. Further expansion in the 1960s transformed Park Lane into the multilane double road that it is today. It is currently home to some of London's most famous monuments such as the Wellington Gate designed and completed in 1830 by Decimus Burton near the Hyde Park Corner underground. Another historic monument is the Apsley House otherwise known as Number One, London. It was built in the 1770s by Lord Apsley and is famously known as the former residence of the Duke of Wellington. Today it stands as an art gallery and museum housing several famous European paintings and other historical artifacts. However it is what is beyond the Hyde Park Corner that defines Park Lane as an uptown part of London's Mayfair area. The Dorchester, being without a doubt the most stylish Park Lane hotel consists of several famous establishments such as the China Tang restaurant, the Alain Ducasse french cuisine restaurant, as well as The Promenade Bar. Another iconic Park Lane sight is The Grosvenor House Hotel with its refined atmosphere, bars, restaurants, and all around great service. It is also currently home to one of Europe's largest ballrooms, known as "The Great Room". Along with the more recent and nearby addition of the JW Steakhouse with its classy Bourbon Bar, Park Lane has managed to flawlessly blend new and old world styles, bestowing to London some of the charm that it is certainly so well known for the world over.
