Nothing Can Stop Me
When we set out to do anything, it is often without enough thought or preparation
. We go gangbusters, nothing can stop us, invincible. This is very true of losing weight. The false misconception is that all we need to do to lose weight is to go on some kind of diet and we will shed some pounds. After all, most diets are pretty much alike, aren't they? Many people do not realize the diversity of diet philosophies. Many are really good, but some are just plain dangerous. But, we are so excited that we charge on without much thought.
Whether it is losing weight, building a doghouse, or trying to build a business at home, preparation and thought are key ingredients. It is kind of like the forest and the trees ("Can't see the forest through the trees"). We get so exited about what we want to do, and anticipate all of the really GREAT results that will be coming our way, that we simply forge ahead without thinking about what we are doing. It is only when things begin to take some unexpected turns that we decide to look at our project more closely. In the meantime, we have lost a lot of time, effort, and often money.
So, here are a few ideas that can help make your goal come into
perspective and see the light of day.
1. Choose what is right for you. If you are building a doghouse
you are mindful of how big it must be in relationship to your dog.
If you are choosing a weight loss plan, then you need to make sure
that it fits with you and your lifestyle. If you don't like to
cook, choose a diet that does not require a lot of cooking, or at
least allows for foods that do not require a lot of preparation.
2. Write it down. Write down what you want to accomplish.
Writing down what we want gives us some idea of how close we are to
reaching our goal. We use maps to find our way in a car. Make
yourself a map of what it will be like getting to you goal.
3. Pay attention. Stay focused on what you are trying to do.
If you are starting a business, then don't just watch for the
money, but keep in mind your customers, your time, and whether or
not you are enjoying what you are doing. If you are losing weight,
then you don't want to just look at the scale every day (bad idea
anyway). Does the diet that you have chosen fit into your life? Is the
diet something that you can stay on for a long time (the rest of
your life)?
4. Do not give up. Once you give in to either laziness,
complacency, or just plain being discouraged, then it is over.
If you are trying to diet and you give up, then you certainly will
lose. Weight is not what you will lose. Your confidence and self-esteem
will certainly find a chunk of themselves missing and maybe gone.
To recap, whatever you begin to do, begin at the beginning. Write things down. This way you will know what you want, and you will have some idea of what things will be like when you arrive at, or are getting close to, your goal. Stay focused. This is sometimes difficult, but discipline is a must. If you are not self-disciplined, now is a good time to begin practicing. Make sure that giving up is not an option for you. If you quit you may never go back, and you will always wonder what things might have been like if you just had not quit.
