Carriage bolts are almost like plow bolts. It is a bolt with a round head normally used for timber, and is threaded along a certain part of the shaft. The main thing that separates a carriage from the other types of bolt is that it is inserted into a pre drilled hole and is not intended to be driven. The main purpose of this type of bolt just like any other bolt is for fastening. It is a bolt used with an internal thread or a complementary head in the form of a nut. Bolts such as these are very beneficial to our everyday lives as these holds objects together; objects that we normally use and depend on everyday like bridges, railways and even cars.

Just like any other bolt, this type of bolt has a head and a helical ridge that is wrapped around its body; this is normally called an external thread, or simply thread. One major benefit that this type of bolt has over the others is that there is no need for you to use a screwdriver and screw it since it is simply inserted into a preexisting hole. Unlike other types of screw, carriage bolts are normally larger in size and has a domed head. It also has a cylindrical threaded body known as the shank or shaft, from the tip of the bolt up to the underside of the head.

Carriage bolt are different from screws, although they basically observe the same function and use. The only difference is that bolts are normally just tightened onto a nut as opposed to a screw which is driven into it. There are a lot of different type of bolt and these are carriage, head, and lag bolts. Head bolts are also known as lug bolts and are bolts used to driven into a tapped hole to attach objects together. Lag bolts are also known as lag screws, simply because their functions are almost the same as screws except that they are much bigger in size.

Nowadays, carriages are simply used for show or as tourist attractions. The bolts used to construct these carriages as different from the other types of bolts have been known to be a carriage bolt.

Nowadays, these types of bolts are mainly used for other purposes since carriages are no longer commonly used. One of the most common uses of this type of bolt is on railroads or tracks. Whatever the name or the term is one cannot stress the basic importance of the function that screws and bolts like carriage bolts provide.
